I asked power engineering for details on their Phase 1 conversion, however I had an email back informing me that they are no longer performing this upgrade due to failures with the Big End (only a coupe of them that had the conversion failed)...

Has any one else heard this???
What other options are there???

Thanks
Mark.

Cool

More likely does anyone NOT know about this?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Mark, do a search on Power Engineering and be prepared for a lot of reading. Best thing is to look at it all and make your own mind up.

Regards

D

Agree completely with D - running a search is the best option for PE views.

Popular alternatives are the Unichip

Hutton D,

I agree that the big end situation is contraversial, however I can also guarantee that phase one conversion problems are NOT all rumours.

I don't want to get involved in this again, it's been done before, however I really don't want to see the very real problems that occurred (for myself, at the very least) dismissed in such a casual manner either.

Were all the cars SGT commented serviced by SGT?

Allegedly, SGT serviced an STi of a friend of mine and didn't fill the oil correctly. he keeps the bearing shells as a memento.

Just a thought.

A significant number of STi Vs have had piston and crank failures. They have two things in common - either run on 95SUL, and/or, they have breathing modifications without any form of air/fuel ratio adjustment (AFR module, Link, Unichip, Motec, etc).

Hey presto, car runs lean, is already at its limit of knock control because of low octane fuel and so piston overheats and either melts or causes the big end to fail due to cooked oil....

...and even the simple addition of a back box can be enough as these cars are at the limit of the standard ECUs performance envelope.

This could have happened to my car, except that ironically, PE noticed it was detting at a RR day.

Question

This is an interesting question (well to me anyway ) I've been meaning to ask for some time and this seems like a good thread in which to do it.

Is there a cheap & practical way to investigate the conditions of the heads in an Impreza engine? How much is a strip & rebuild? Are there any ultrasonic tests that can be done on the car?

It seems unfair (& bordering on libellous) to say that any chip conversion caused an engine to fail if there is no evidence to prove that the engine was in pristine condition before the modification. Showing the remains of an engine that went bang after an engine mod doesn't prove anything if there aren't any "before" shots showing everything to be new & shiny. You simply cannot prove that the damage is solely caused by the modification.

As has been stated before, by the time you get to hear knocking from within the cabin, it's already been happening (& eating your engine) for a long time.

Anyway, I thought the STi's all went bang because they were designed for 100/105 RON petrol and the ECU's couldn't cope with being thrashed around on 95/97 RON.

Discuss.

The PossumLink is going very well thanks to Bob Rawle (Cheer’s Bob) It is going at about the same pace as my old PE Phase 1 and as I praised that, I must also praise the PossumLink.
But then Moray you know how well it’s going don’t you…
Ian was playing golf when we went by the course at Long Aston said we sounded like 2 F1 cars going by.
Happy Motecing

Bob,

I hope we didn't put him off his stroke, so to speak!

It did seem to be going rather well, as you say.

Put off your stroke at 7pm? Cickey, but you start early! You must be knackered by morning

Ian,

No, I don't think that's me... but I'll try and keep it down a bit when I'm near the golf club... until the petrol shortages finish...
