MY00 4dr Turbo 4000 miles

My car's making a whining noise at low speed, especially in 1st/2nd gear that sounds like the tranmission. It's not the turbo - the revs aren't high enough for that to have kicked it (and I've got a boost guage). It makes no difference if it's hot or cold.

It's absolutely fine in higher gears / higher speeds and the car feels fine.

I don't recall it being so noisy when I first got it, but the dealer doesn't think anything is amiss.

Any ideas, or is my memory just clouded?

My MY98 suffers from some whine in 1st and 2nd gears - I think that it is normal for Imprezas to whine a bit in the lower gears. Like you car, my gearbox doesn't whine in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears.

My 1st gear started to whine quite a lot on the overrun, but this has 'stabilised', so I decided not to worry umless it gets worse.

After a prolonged argument with my dealer, IM eventually authorised a replacement gearbox, which sounded exactly the same!.
