Question

On sunday I fitted a de-limiter to my car.
No problems there.
Whilst under the steering column reconnecting the speedo cable I noticed two wires which were obviously meant to be joined but were not.
I dutifully reconnected them and hey presto
all of a sudden the check engine lights started flashing.
then i dutifully disconnected said wires to stop this happening.
I have had the car for 16 months and never looked under there until then.
Therefore a conclusion was reached that either 1. the garage that sold it to me disconnected them. or 2. Li***s disconnected them during one of the three services that they have done.
When turning on the ignition the check engine light comes on but when I start it it goes off.
In the time that I have had the car I have had no problems with it.
What could the check engine light be telling me ???????
Are these wires meant to be together ??????
Is my car going to break ??????
Why have L*****s not found this during routine maintenance ?????
What is the temperature in Scotland today?????
Have I been fleeced ?????

Cool

Jim,

These 2 connectors are supposed to be apart, if you check engine light comes on when they are not joined then you join them to get the error code, sort of diag thingy majigy....as you can tell im not to technical on this stuff but ive seen people join them on MY93 WRX when ive had probs to get the error codes.

Hope this rests your mind

Wink

You have discovered the Read Memory connectors. They should be left unconnected for normal use. If you wish to interrogate your car's ECU, you

1) connect them.
2) turn on the ignition
3) the check engine light starts flashing.
4) a 0.5 second flash with 0.5 second gap
indicates no error has been logged by the
ECU.
5) a combination of long and short flashes
indicates a problem.

I suggest you do a search on this forum for "Error codes", if you want to find out more about this.

I take it that the check engine light should come on with the others, oil and battery!!!!, when the ignition is initially turned on. And then all lights extinguish when car is started.
I'm sorry for being so stupid but still trying to learn after a year of ownership.

BTW, I own MY93 WRX and can't see these connectors under dashboard, any suggestions?.

Muddy.
