2nd gear problems with new cars?
#1
A couple of new owners including me have noticed the car is hard to get into 2nd when changing down.
This morning it was a lot milder and it seemed easier to change down into 2nd.
Could ambient temperature have anything to do with this problem? Do people think it will ease with age?
cheers,
Greg

Hi
I have now done about 500 miles in my car, the first cold morning that I drove it I thought it would never go into gear, the second morning it was better, this morning it was a lot easier, I put it down to the oil in the gearbox being cold because as soon as it warms up it's fine.
What do you think?
Ron

Hi,
I have a MY98 UK, and the 1st-2nd, 2nd/1st, and 3rd-2nd gear changes were always very difficult when the car was new. The car had to be stationary to engage 1st when cold.
By about 7500 miles, it had completely changed - the shift action was much smoother, and engaging 2nd gear from 1st and 3rd in particular became much easier.
I think it is a characteristic of the car that the synchros take time to 'bed in', and over time the shift action becomes less baulky and smoother. It is still not brilliant when the car is cold and ambient temperatures are low - I think the gearbox oil is relatively thick so that it stays viscous enough when the transmission is gets very hot (and it does!). I am going to re-fill the box with Silkolene Syntrans at the next service to see if this helps at all.
Cheers,
Alex

Greg,
I know what you are talking about. I posted the same question a few days ago. My turbo is about 600 miles old and the same problem. I must admit it seems to be getting better. I know that it is still in the run period but I had a 50 mile run in the dark and drove it hard but not over 4000RPM - it might be my imagination but it seems better after this run. How is your car for rattels and squeaks?? - They are driving me crazy.
