New Age Cars - Over 400 HP
#1
Gents, as you have seen from my previous threads on STi 8 Tuning there appears to be some difficulty in getting these cars into the mid to high 400's. There are a few new age cars running at or around 400 HP but over that seems to be a mystery
I would be interested to hear from anyone running an STi7 or 8 at mid to high 400's and the spec they have had to go to to get this.
Cars I know of so far,
G-Force Demonstrator - 404 HP (but with 3.5" Downpipe & Exhaust and HKS Headers and an APS SR40 turbo)
Jonnos Car - around 400 (NF used maybe)
Darren Tidy - around 400
Mine - 362 still
It would appear that Classics are alot more receptive to the mods than the new age cars???

Conrad San,
I don't think that's the case.
At the end of the day, you need air, fuel, and a correctly timed bang, and you will make power.
I think you need to go back to basics, just like the Karate Kid.

No.
I mean stop worrying about cams, valves, New age engine voodoo, dump valves, inlet pipes and such stuff.
Find out a few basic things about your engine.
You seem to be clutching at straws and looking for power in all the wrong places.
Tweenierob got over 400hp at PE with ported headers, std inlet pipe, 3-2.5in downpipe, std phase 1 WRX engine, 550 injectors and a 20g turbo, all with a remapped standard ECU breathing through a MAF sensor.
Do you have air?
Do you have fuel?
Do you have compression?
Do you have ignition?
FOr any given single point of operation, that's all that matters.
For instance, if you want to check the BOV isn't leaking, don't buy a new one, just get rid of the suspect one and check it out.
Right now you seem to going rabid with the whole thing, take a step back.

Paul, you have such a way with words m8. I have fuel, I have air, I have ignition, advanced it and retarded it plenty to no effect. the compression is being checked today Other than that you are quite correct, I am clutching at straws! I'm just frustrated thats all.

Hmm, I forgot one thing, getting rid of it all, ie exhaust.
All I am saying, is start to look at things in more basic terms, start at the beginning.
I appreciate that it's not always easy for you as you are away on business. I think what you need (well not just you) is to find a supplier or 'integrator' that you can trust, someone that is willing to recommend parts that are right for your car, not just the parts with the best margins. Do you have a plan? Or even a target?
On a more practical note...
You say you have tried advancing and retarding the ignition, but do you know if you're getting a good quality spark?
Have you made any attempts to measure exhaust back pressure, exhaust gas temperature, inlet pressure drop, inlet temperature drop? These things will give you clues as to what is really going one, rather than what the ECU thinks is going on.

Andy,
As I understand it, the STI doesn't have tumbler valves, the spacer manifold is just that, a spacer, somewhere for the injectors to go.
The inlet ports at the mouth are huge anyway, they are massive compared to a cossie for instance.

Pretty sure that the car that got 404bhp - was this Darrens has since been remapped and will be getting in the mid 450's plus!!
Turbo choice makes a huge difference as does the spark plugs at this level
My PFR7's lasted no time at all -having put in racing 8's the advance has actually been turned up as a result..... cheap MOD!!
Cant see why with the right bits you shouldnt get around 450bhp on an sti8 2 litre
