Question

Hey Guys (n' Gals),

INTERCOOLER QUESTIONS BASED ON UK MY97

(1) Can I replace my existing intercooler with the larger STi version without problems?

(2) If it is possible, can I expect to see major performance benefits?

(3) LEER mentioned that TDi may do 2nd hand STi intercoolers, anyone know anywhere else?

I know front mounting is the best way, but do not want to butcher the car around too much ............... yet .

Cheers

Chris

p.s. Anyone got a Mongoose Exhaust on a UK?

Cool

Howdy...

You wont notice any gain in performance... especially now winter is here... try and get a new version intercooler.... off a V. it has a better design of core. and has a better dump valve (bolted onto it)

There isnt much in it... try fitting a decent water spray kit.. or decent lagging kit to minimise heat...

Forget TDI..never mention that acronym on here again!!

J. (used a UK cooler....STI cooler....Pace charge cooler...front cooler...water spray)

Regards to Intercoolers look at purchasing a Bar and plate solution. Here are a few points on the BPM solution.

Up to 40% superior HEAT SINK capability compared to Tube and Fin intercoolers

Bar and plate design delivers DENSER AIR

Design maintainsBOOST PRESSURE

CHARGE TEMPERATURE REDUCED drastically even at high RPM

FLOW RATE is not compromised at raised boost levels

HIGH THERMAL ABILITY to transfer heat

Gas flow is increased due to HIGH FLOW INTERNAL CORE

Coupled with water spray BAR AND PLATE CORE is mostefficient option

LARGE CORE benifits intake charge to exchange heat with ambient air passing through it

And please remember a front mounyed will increase lag unless you revers the inlet manifold.

Firefox point is taken that in the middle of winter you will no feel a great increase but the weather changes....

Greg (BPM)

I agree the core design is important... but so are the end tanks.. and the pipework... the surface area compared to the depth is important.. basically it comes down to pressure drop across the core.... you want as little as possible.... a few PSI or so..

Apex-i do good cores..

J.

ps - I'm running a bar/plate design
