I'm lookig at buying a scoob that's done pretty near to 100k miles.

However, my mate tells me that scoob gear boxes are a tad unreliable from this point on - is this so?

Not sure i would agree they are any less reliable from that point on than any other 100K mile car. They have been known to go with ALOT less mileage than that on but usually due to higher torque outputs from the engine, or driving conditions/technique .
The fact its lasted as long as it has, assuming it is the original gearbox, would suggest its no more a concern than any other part of the car.
There are many scoobs that have done higher milages than this and been reliable.
