Hi,

I have a 95 WRX and it has just developed a stutter only in 5th gear.

1/2/3/4 with hard boost --fine.
Boot it in 5th and you get a bit of putt putt putt....

Any suggestions?

Problem is now getting worse.

1. What are coil packs, what do they do and how much are they.

I have booked the car in for a PE Phase 1 next week, so hopefully they will sort these problems for me.

Mark,

If I'm not mistaken, the coil packs that you are referring to are like ignition coils. There's one per cylinder, and no ignition leads!

Obviously if your coil packs are breaking down, it may not be possible to produce a spark to ignite the fuel, hence no power (and possibly backfire as the unburnt fuel hits the exhaust manifold, just like an antilag system).

I'm not sure why this should only happen in fifth; if your coil packs were breaking down, I would have expected problems in lower gears too. Perhaps the problem lies elsewhere?

As for cost... I got a pair of coil packs a month or two back and I think they were UKP 47+VAT each.

Cheers,

Pat.
