Question

Whats the general concensus on how long a clutch should take to fit to an STi?

One supplier has said 5 hours @ £45 / hr?

Anybody know anywhere else?

personally id opt for a garage that gives a fixed quote & avoid the £per hour brigade, im going to get mine done shortly, ive found 2 garages that have quoted £150 4 the labour, that will do me

Cheers Andy, £150 sounds better than 5 hours at £45 / hr. I am not too far from you. just over the border in west yorkshire.

Mine took about 5 hours to replace. There was a bit of a fight getting the box off the engine.

Normal quote is for 5.5 hrs to do a turbo clutch, thats with taking the gearbox off and "not" the exhaust downpipe. Some garages prefer to remove the engine, saying its "easier?"
As for the labour price, well best as you say to shop around for that and definately get a proper quote for it. You dont want to pay full dealer labour rate if you can help it. Anything over 35.00per hour is going to leave a nasty taste in the wallet.

Once the car is on a lift I can have it down in 45 minutes-ish myself (with all the right tools naturally), installing the new clutch is a 20 minute job, then getting the gearbox back in is another 1-2 hour job (it can be slightly fiddly).

So in total for an IT-sorta dude that's done it ~10 times we're talking about 3 hours plus a few coffee, and swearing breaks.

What clutch kit would you guys recomend? I would probably want to upgrade from stock as I have smoked the current one a few times (is 45K ok mileage for stock). However, the price of AP and the like is a bit scary!

Question

Thanks Guys, David / Andy Etc. I'll speak to Howard later today. I was going to go for the AP Organic, anybody know any stats on this?

Will it cope with future 600 BHP projects?

Don't want a paddle type, have to drive round town

Conrad

PS Andy, whats the links for the garages you suggested?

I would suggest that you will only be able to use a paddle for that power.. Depends on torque... rather than power IMO.

Only one clutch that i can think of that will hold it..

p.s. my AP gave up at 419bhp with less than 400lbft of torque..

Question

Tweenie, the AP organic gave up at less than 400 ft/lb? Damn, best not put one of those in with the car as it.

David, what's it like...on or off control or snatchy?

I can only guess on my torque TBH mate, i couldnt get the boost in on the rollers, it made 329lbft @1.5bar, but we mapped the car for 1.8bar on the road... Merv said he expected about 370lbft at 1.5bar if i had got the boost in sooner. Whilst Pavlo was mapping the car the clutch gave up... we got the car mapped and it said Bollox straight after lol

Day before power engineering i fitted a Lateral organic clutch, it had about 1000miles on it when i got it, must say i was very impressed with it. Not a hint of any slipping and held well when launching at 6k...
But... if you are serious about your power expectation, there is only the paddle option IMHO.
