I have just got my 98 WRX today and have been getting to grips with it as it is my first turbo car.

Now, everything seems to work fine but there is a noise that is bothering me. Its when I am steadily accelerating to about 3k and then easing off the power to maintain speed. I am not taking the power off completely, but it seems to be producing a similar noise to when the dump valve kicks in when changing gear. I think it is venting the boost. Am I right?

what type of dump valve have you got fitted, standard or a VA type.

A va type may be releasing the pressure and that what your hearing.

To be honest I dont even know what the damn thing looks like or where it is located. I think that VA means vent to atmosphere? If so then it sounds like that is what is happening, but why at a constant 3000 rpm?

oh, and I have just noticed that the boost gauge shows 0.5 bar at full boost. Eh? should this not be around 1.0 bar? and could this be what the venting is producing ie less boost pressure?
