What do I need to get 300 BHP
#1
Hi,
Can anyone tell me what kind of mods are necessary to obtain 300 BHP from my 2001 WRX. The only mods so far are a Hayward and Scott decat, centre and rear box and a new Samco turbo hose kit. I intend to get downpipe and up pipe as soon as the warranty has run out. I know that I am going to need an ECU upgrade and would imagine it will be an Ecutec remap but don't want to have this done until all other parts are sorted. Any help with this would be much appriciated.
Cheers.

The main requirement would be changing the turbo, so again this is something you might want to leave until after your warranty has expired.

With an aggressive map you can just knock on the door of it!
Induction kit, full decat,tek3 you can just get it
I've had 299bhp with 292lb/ft with these main parts. At the end of the day thats all your TD04 will push and it will be working hard along with your injectors!

You can go beyond 300bhp if you want to prove a point, but at what cost?
A TD04 will be working harder than hard to attain those figures. Seeing as Mr Dooby Do seems to want to preserve his warranty, trying to push to these sorts of levels on the standard turbo may not be the wisest move.
If this sort of power is the aim, it's far more sensible to do it with a bigger turbo that will be working within much safer limits, and which will pass a much cooler charge onto the intercooler.

I don't think 1.3bar is hard for the turbo! If he wants warranty to stay intact i think he's limited to 220bhp
He could go to 260bhp with PPP and warranty
285 with a de-cat PPP and no warranty
Dooby asked what to do to get 300bhp and i told him if he's worried about warranty, he should buy a STI with PPP
I told him the cheapest way to get near 300bhp

I'd agree with that, the TD04 is just about good for 300 on a good day if the car is "good" and it has a full decat and induction BUT, it will very much depend on the individual car itself as to how close. They are all different !!!

Thanks for all the comments regarding my question. I'm not so worried about the warrantee as I intend to carry out the further mods when it has run out. So the fitting of a bigger turbo isn't too much of an issue. I just want to make sure I get all the right bits before spending money on the remap. I only want to pay out for the remap once and not have to get it done again once other mods are added. What turbo would I be looking for preferably one without too much lag.

If you only want 300bhp i would personally stick with the TD04 because of the drivability of it!
If you are planning for more then you might aswell buy a bigger enough turbo for around 350bhp, something like a MD304 is a nice turbo. but then you will also need bigger injectors, front mount intercooler, uprated fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, then with all these parts you will need to have the ECU first because these parts have to be mapped in!
So to answer your question you need the TEK3 first, which you can quite happily tune to 290bhp and then see how you go! If you want more, then go for it then. WRX engine will quite happily run 350bhp, but the gearbox won't A gearset that can handle that power! = £3000 fitted, give or take a pound or hundred I know

Its torque that kills the box not power, 350bhp on a std box is ok, 350 ft lbs "might" break it in time though. Like most things some last and some don't.
