does the my02 have a straight cut box?
that sorta straight cut sound when slowing down in second
- or what am i hearing?

no standard road cars that I can think of have a straight cut box.

Possibly a straight cut reverse, but thats it. hence whiney reversing.

 

Sounds like a gearbox problem, my friend's 01 had a fault gearbox and it was noticed by myself when I was in his car, I could not believe the noise it made. Check it against another or with a good dealer.
