Gearbox help
#1
Ive just done a gear oil change got all the oil out into a suitable bowl but found metal in the oil and on the bottom of the drain plug, is this any thing to worry about? And also ive got a whining when accelerating if I let off the acc pedal it goes but it does it in all gears. There is no problems putting it in gear or driving its just the noise and metal in the oil.
Any advice thanks

unless you're having a lot of grinding issues...
or inability to select a gear...
i'd not worry about it too much.
"some" metal shavings is normal
but large chunks of metal..
and/or grinding gears? then i'd be worried....
hope this helps.

i have similar symtons to you, UK MY98 with 56k on the clock though.
I'm getting the whining noise only when in 1st (when 'not' accelarating though - accelerate or depress the clutch and it goes away), and when going into some gears (1st & reverse mainly) crunch
So, i've just (today) changed the oil for castrol syntrax. found some shavings plug as well as some muck (thankfully no big bits).
I've since been for a short spin and although the whining in 1st is still there the crunching between gears has seemed to have been resolved or is not as bad - will confirm tomorrow after a longer run.
Ive been told that they all whine

Matt - I wouldn't worry about it, you'll just get as paranoid as the rest of us I spend most of my time listening for little strange noises nowadays instead of just enjoying driving it. My solution is an empty credit card, locked away at home, "just in case"
