I have a '93 WRX with a melted piston. Once the engine was removed from the car and the heads taken off it was found to have a melted piston. I also noticed it seemed to be the closed type block that is used. I thought only the STi's had a closed type block ? The replacement bottom end I have is of the open type design. Is there any problems with using this ?

Can anyone shed some light on this ?

It is my understanding that all EJ20G's made before 10/7/1994 were closed deck. Standard WRX EJ20G's post 10/94 are open deck; the WRX-RA and STi remained closed deck until 9/96.

My 93 wrx has a closed deck too. Basically as said above most jap wrxs have closed deck before MY94.

do you know what the cause of the melted piston was? ie wrong fuel type?

closed deck blocks have hatch markings (bit like graph paper) on the rear of the engine block near the crank sensor

dont know what caused the melted piston as the car was bought this way. Suspected that the lad was running it on normal $hitty unleaded but who knows !
