my 94 wrx seems to cut at high speed well 110 mph and ive been advised it may be still limited or it has R.A gearing, what is ra gearing , i have noticed it seems to rev out quick and i dont seem to get much out of the gears, then it shuts down at around 110 as though the engine just dies and the rev counter shoots down to zero, weird is the gearing setup along the lines of a motorbike sproket ie big cog at back little at front for acceleation opposite for top end , its very baffling like not sure what to do just strange thats all

At 100Km/h or 60Mph how many revs is your car pulling in top? Because if it is revving quite high then it most likely will have the close ratio gearbox which MOST but not ALL RA models have.

well it seems to rev up to the red very quickly and i take it no more past the red ,then at about 110 at about 5 to 5 and a half k revs the engine just cuts and the rev counter shoots to zero for a couple of seconds then it suddenly kicks back in but ive never floored it again straight away just in case theres a problem with the car and this ra gearing is there anything i can do instead of fitting a new box

Sounds like you've got a short one, yes.

Regular WRX top gear is 21.8 mph per 1000 rpm if I remember correct, so at an indicated 3000 rpm you'd expect to see at least 66mph, and given the fact that the speedo should be over-reading, probably over 70.

Type R gearing has 18.5mph per 1000rpm top gear, which fits with an indicated 60 at 3K (56.5 with a little over-reading).

obviously its a bad thing then or does it mean quicker accel and slower top end or doesnt it work like that ,because it just pulls and pulls b4 you know it its at cut out speed ie 110 but why will it red line in all the gears except 5 were it cuts at 110 is this to do with the gearing or the limiter ,how can i check to see if it has been de limited.cause even though the gearing is not very good it should still red line shouldnt it ?

In practice it means more gearchanging, more engine noise at cruising speeds, worse fuel economy and slightly better acceleration.

but why will it red line in all the gears except 5 were it cuts at 110 is this to do with the gearing or the limiter
Could be both. How fast is the car travelling on the red line in 4th then? Quicker than 110?

how can i check to see if it has been de limited.
In most cases you should be able to see the converter spliced in the speedo cable somewhere. If you don't know what you're looking for though, you may not spot it. The only way to make certain is to take it to a specialist who knows about import Subarus.

cause even though the gearing is not very good it should still red line shouldnt it ?
It won't necessarily redline in top. no. All depends on what the gearing is, and whether the car's power and torque output is enough to overcome the aerodynamic drag, transmission losses and tyre/road friction at whatever the speed is.
