Question

I have a MY99 STI V5 Type R.

For a little while now I have been noticing a knocking noise coming from the rear of my car, mostly at crawling speeds and when coming on and off the clutch i.e. when approaching a junction etc.

Now tonight when driving home the noise seems to of gotten worse. It now makes a kind of grinding type noise as well.

Got home and jacked the car up. Gave the left rear wheel bit of a turn backwards and forwards and can hear a strange clunking noise coming from what sounds like this diff???

Any one got any ideas on this? All rubber bushes etc are fine. Not the exhaust knocking as different sound to that and drive shafts seem to be ok too??

Anyone know if there is some way of pin pointing the problem as I don't want to drive it encase I make matters worse!

the only clonking from a diff I've heard was from the front one on mine, it had a Kaaz lsd in and when I took it out it was set to hard. It used to clunk and clatter when taking up drive etc.

Has the car done this since you've had it?. Perhaps it has some modification to it. I've heard about rear diffs being packed out to get greater lock on them, this would prob make a clattering noise.

Might be worth checking the oil in the diff.

Don't quote me on this though, it's based on my experience

No hasn't always done it since I have had it (over a year now).

Yea it seems to do it when the drive is taken up or let go i.e. putting foot on clutch or pulling away. Like there is slack being taken up???

God how much would this cost to sort out any ideas? ain't going to be cheap is it!!!

Well don't panic just yet.

You've got to get it checked out by someone who's not going to rip you off.

Find out who to go to in your area(put a post up) and find out what it is.

If the diff is knackered for some reason, you could get a second hand unit from someone like grade a subaru breakers or similar.

First off, get it checked out. You never know it might be something stupid, you might be pannicing and over reacting, like I usually do

Also someone will probably see this post tommorrow(when they are s'posed to be working) and have an answer for you, so keep looking.

Good luck

I am sure you could get a secondhand one easily.. from Grade A Subaru for example..

Change the oil.... there is two square holed drain plugs on the back... top one is for filling.. fill to level with hole and bottom one for draining.. use a litre of Castrol Syntrax which you can get from Halfords is no where else. I believe it is 0.9litres to fill..

The square holes in the plugs are the same size as a rachet..

you can find Grade A off this page here

Thanks for the info guys.

Will try phoning Extreme Scoobies tomorrow as they are the nearest place to me who will deal with Jap Imports. See if I can get down there and have them look at it.

Fingers crossed
