Most diesels are engine driven. Some mechanical, some belt driven. The early Granada with the peugeot engine ( P505 etc ) had a belt driven pump. A lot of sierras and granadas ( incl cosworth ) used an electric pump for power assisting brakes, and any cars I ahve drove with it, the brakes felt excellent, although it would I think it would take too much room in a subaru, extending quite far out from the bulkhead.
Some diesels ( Japs are common ) also have the vacuum pump built onto the rear of the alternator. Isuzus usually have this ( as fitted to some Vauxhalls, and Isuzu's obviously ) If you have about 40-50mm behind the alternator that is.

Check out pneumatic control systems suppliers for pumps.

Also, after doing a quick search....no idea of cost though.

Also may be worth looking at some cars that have cruise control.. I think it is sometimes vacuum operated, and not sure that it could always rely on engine vacuum to operate.

Some pics of the Isuzu alternator/pump, and the sierra elctric assembly.
I think the sierra one is electric/hydraulic, rather than electric/vacuum, but not sure.

I've got one on my RA and would be very happy to supply pics if anyone is interested. Believe they can still be sourced although mine took a little while to arrive. Cost 18 months ago was £250 + VAT from memory - but it fits perfectly, like it was made for the job, which it wasn't, but works brilliantly. Apparently it is actually a compressor wired or plumbed in reverse!
