hi all
ive got a legacy turbo estate
trouble is its geared for about 180 at redline
i was wondering if a different box/final drive
eg import would drop the gearing a touch for a
bit more accelleration/towing power and how much else would need to be altered
cheers for any help

ive got a legacy, got an RA impreza gearbox and rear diff.
does 125mph at the redline, and is close ratio, makes a huge difference to acceleration!
80mph is about 4000rpm on motorway

UKLegacyT.....I bet your car drinks fuel!
I've got a UK Leg T too, 94 spec, and it tops out at 140mph. I think that's an aerodynamic limit, tbh, though that is only an assumption.
There's about 1500-2000rpms to go at that speed.

I've had both import and UK Legacy estates. The gearing is the same on both. Ian, that's pretty amazing mpg for that kind of rpm at 80. How much of a nightmare was the gearbox/diff swap? Did you replace the internals of the box or the whole thing which has different matings and associated probs?....

i got hold of the complete box, along with the rear diff.
box fits straight in, whilst the rear diff just requires a few swaps with external legacy diff parts:
1) the flange at the front of the diff where the propshaft bolts to, this is because the central alignment recess is a slightly different diameter on each. to swap, just undo the big nut (easier if slackened on car with driveshafts still on, cos its VERY tight, then pull the flange off (need hub puller probably).
2) the diff backplate, cos the studs that bolt to the rear cross member are longer on legacy. undo bolts, swaps plates, easy.
ian
p.s. yeah mpg is good really, bottom end is lightened flywheel, cossie pistons etc. heads are fully ported, pipercross induction. back to standard apart from those bits though. standard exhaust is on, but ive removed the cats.

Alex,
i bought the gearbox (containing front and centre diffs), and also the rear diff from the same car, an RA close ratio model.
i believe the diffs are 4.44 ratio on these.
standard legacy turbo front diff is 3.9 and rear is about 3.545 with a 1.1:1 ratio inside the box to compensate.
