Greetings all. I'm new to the many and varied pleasures of Subaru ownership so please bear with me if I'm asking obvious questions!

Was trawling through my local vehicle dismantlers today looking for interior trim bits to fix some rough edges on my new pride and joy when I found a wrecked Scoob with a pretty mint looking VF29 turbo in it.

I know this is basically the same turbo fitted to the STI 6, but I'm not interested in upping the power to any major extent for the time being. However, if it'll offer improvements in spool-up and throttle response over the standard TD04, as well as offer the opportunity for higher boost in future, I might just grab it.

So, will it be a worthwhile upgrade, and if so, how much would you offer the scrapper for it?

Also, on a similar subject, the exhaust system really needs replacement, and I'm tempted to get something nice, but want easy life and don't want to have to fill car with knocklinks/AFR gauges etc if I can help it. Am unsure whether to go for full decat system or just replace the downpipe and BB.

Would a full decat be safe on an AE801 ECU (K&N panel filter, otherwise standard) car, or would I need the gadgets to make sure the higher intake/exhaust flow weren't causing problems?

Cheers for any advice!
