440.5 bhp and Torque 381 lb-ft @ only 1.47 !!!
Very nice results Andy...but will this mean that John have to get something else than the Syncro gearbox(only rated 450/400) for his 2.33L project
This would mean that one should not need to go to a 2.33L to get 450/400 figures ...maybe a 2.2l stroker will be enough

Must get the biggest adrenaline buzz ever driving it now surely??
I'm going to work on the driveability of it now to make it a bit more pleasant in traffic.........then sell it !

Mine still ran closed loop ok when I had the JECS fitted, not sure about emissions ? Harvey said he could smell the difference when driving to Star behind me.

I missed out on the group day at Star on Sunday due to a blown gasket on the turbo inlet After removing the uppipe I noticed that the flange was slightly distorted, after spending an hour with a big file it was flat again however I was never convinced that the 'velocity chamber' inside the gruppe uppipe was conducive to good flow....so I decided to fit my Scoobysport uppipe to it. The problem here is that the gruppe collector exit is 2 1/4" and the scoobysport uppipe is 2" bore
So, out with the welding gear !!! I welded up the inside of the collector and filed it back to level (not a fun job) then ported the exit to give a smooth, stepless transfer into the 2" uppipe
Spool up has not changed, still 1.2 bar by 3krpm in 5th although it feels stronger in the midrange now.
As the 20G spools so quickly it needs a decent control system to avoid overboost. In the absence of a 'proper' boost controller I have fitted a twin dawes combo. One of them 'slugs' the boost during spool up and using a small bleed hole the automatic changeover from low to high is almost seamless
I also fitted the replacemant ignition amp that David Wallis kindly mailed me, this allowed me to increase the boost without my 'normal' torque limiting misfire (thanks David ) and after picking John Bank's brains on ignition timing curves (thanks John )set about remapping my new Microtech ECU.
Harvey was up touring Scotland and asked me if I fancied a run at Star performance, he has run his car at P/eng, Well Lane and G force in its current spec with results ranging from 440 - 470 bhp and he wanted to see what all the fuss was about re Stars 'low reading' rollers - After the two days I'd just spent mapping my ECU, his timing was perfect
Results ? My car had 2 runs back to back within 0.5bhp of each other, the higher of the two was -
440.5 bhp @ 6410rpm
Torque 381 lb-ft at 5700rpm (with over 360lbft from 4300 - 6500rpm)
Boost 1.47 bar max (will post printout if someone can host it ? )
Harveys results were a bit suspect, Jim considered the clutch may have been slipping (new AP) as it recorded 424bhp and 370 lb-ft at 1.8 bar boost. A further run gave the same figure. After a 30 minute cool off period he tried it in 3rd gear and it recorded 441 bhp which Harvey thought was more representative.
To say I'm pleased with my results would be an understatement
but thats it for tuning now, no further on the standard internals I think that would be pushing my luck a bit tooooo far !!
What am I going to do now ??????
cheers
Andy

Hi Andy
That's pritty impresive result's you have there. It would have been good to see you on sunday and eventually see this car of your's after what i have heard. I am glad that the roller's are getting a consident feed back now.
Regard's the up-pipe how do you rate the gruppe s header's and up-pipe for the like's of 300 bhp NOT INTO THE 400S like you lot.
Cheers Dougie

Not sure Dougie, I would say port out the std headers and use a scoobysport uppipe for around 300bhp. Sometimes you can actually lose bhp if the rest of your engine is not flowing enough air to get the exhaust velocity up high enough to 'work' the headers.

He, he - I passed your workshop today and could see some cars and peeps beaving around. I wondered to myself what you might be up to - now I know Very well done and those results are amazing
Easy, take me for a passenger run I was blown away by your car when it was 100bhp less. I'm positivly moist at the thought of it now
What am I going to do now ??????

more good results at the boost andy.
I was looking at john's headers today, trying to work out why they seem so good. the header bores seem quite small with a huge up-pipe bore, I would have actually thought this up-pipe would increase the lag.
was it just the one flange on your unit or both that are distorted? ,I have noticed that the flanges on john's set seem bellied, downwards at the stud holes. the gasket should seal it okay but might be worth levelling off before fitting. the other thing I noticed was how solidly fixed they are. on john's first set of headers, the slip joints where held by springs while these use a fairly sturdy,(probably stainless steel) bar. do you not think that lack of expansion could be a problem with the gruppe s kit? I was surprised how thick this joining bar is and wonder how it would cope on a 20min track session.

Both flanges were distorted but only the top gasket actually blew out. I wasn't sold on the big bore uppipe. Can't see the benefit ?
I think it would be worth filing them flat first.

You've ran that car at higher boost before than it is just now. Can't believe you're not going to ..see ..what the higher boost will give out...
You know your curious to find out...
And at least 30 others!!!
Go on.......

Hi Andy,
Very impressive figures Andy, well done.
Can you confirm what you were burning for this session? Was it regular unadulterated super unleaded/optimax? Would be very impressed if it were, however it does sound like it may be tweaked fuel to run such good power/torque at such low boost levels.
I think you are right to try and leave it alone and just enjoy driving it for a while. I suspect you won't be able to resist at least minor tweaking for long though.

Hi Moray
I'm surprised it took so long for that question to be asked Yes I run on a witches brew which when poured in to the tank instantly releases an extra 60 bhp no need for conventional tuning any more
My fuel brew is no secret, I've been open with it for ages but nobody has really picked up on it. I run 4% methanol mix ie 2ltrs per tankful. It costs £1.20 per litre but when you consider that I've added 2 ltrs of fuel to the mix, the net cost is 41p / litre. That's 82 pence per tankful I don't know of any octane booster cheaper !
The effect of this is greater heat loss to evaporation and a cooler combustion chamber allowing more timing. The AFR also weakens off slightly (2-3%) due to the lower calorific value and the oxygen content within the methanol, this also helps power.
The amount of miles I run on my car in a year (5k) I would need to run for 10 years to get the payback on a water/methanol injection kit (which would be preferable to save methanol when off boost)
Try it, you'll like it Just ensure you have enough fuel to allow for the AFR change.
