I have had my '02 UK WRX for one week now and I am thinking of a new exhaust system. Im not bothered about retaining the CATs but dont really want it stupidly loud. I may get a Magnex, Scorpion or Scooby Sport system fitted. The thing that I have found hard to ascertain is, at present the car is 215BHP right? With a full system and no other mods, what will this rise to? Is it possible to get it to STI power levels (265BHP I believe?)or do they have internal engine variations? I'm sure every new Impreza owner joins the forum and asks the same bone questions but hey, we all start somewhere!!

Mat,
Recently fitted a JW Racing/Magnex decat exhaust to my MY01. With a Dawes Device set at 0.9 bar it recorded 255bhp.
Exhaust not too load but has nice sound.
Hope this helps.

Martin, Thanks for the advice. I will do a bit of research on the Dawes Device side of things but it's good to hear things don't get to loud with an exhaust swap. I have heard Impreza's go past with full systems and they sound fantastic but mine also has to pass as a family car! Is there any risk in upping the boost without a re-map. I had an RS Turbo many moons ago and was told if you up the boost without the fuel then Booom!!
I suppose I will have to read up before tinkering!

Mat,I have a full Scorpion decat system with the Tuner 4 back box.I think it is a really good vfm system but it is monumentally loud with foot to floor. (I like the rumble of it though!)

I think the power gain is around 20-25bhp

Thanks for that, Sorry for not replying but have not been off for a few days. Any other experiences or power gain figures out there. From reading other posts I think I'm leaning towards the Janspeed Scooby Sport System.
The question is leave the Cat's, remove the 2nd Cat or remove both??
Scared I will end up with a car that sounds like thunder!

You have three cats - up-pipe (pre turbo), downpipe (post turbo), and centre section. The better performance gains are from changing the up-pipe and downpipe. The noise levels are most effected by the backbox. Remus, prodrive, mrt are probably the quietest back boxes, with APS very close too. Keeping your original backbox and changing the rest of the system would give you very quiet, and the restriction of the standard backbox may well only cost say 10bhp.

I have scoobysport up-pipe, ported OEM headers, full APS exhaust with sports cat on my MY02 WRX(which is a fair bit quieter than scoobysport or Magnex, still flows well). With Ecutek remap, I got 284bhp/272lbft. other difference is the power comes in much earlier and keeps on much longer - how about 260lbft from 2800rpm, and 280bhp from 5800-6800rpm? Well in excess of a standard STi.

The STi is a different engine in may places, and a bigger turbo giving slower spool up (needs more revs for turbo to work) but more power at higher revs. STi with the same mods as mine might give 320-330bhp.

Lordy....

I thought I was the only one "dreaming" on the Drivetrain section today...400BHP....John Banks......Anti-Lag...

I've got a Haywood and Scott de-cat via Stan Palmers (Ian Armstrong), I know absoulutely nothing about this apart from Steve Sherwen and thenrest on Scoobynet who rave about the better performance... BUT the Haywood and Scott pipes delivered looked QUALITY, The noise is brilliant, so much so that I'm not sure if they are leaking somewhere??

Now booked in to re-map the ECU for the de-cat and check for leaks!!

Lordy

Don't do what I did.....!!!

Order from Haywood and Scott and ask for delivery to Stan Palmers for them to fit..easy

Haywood and Scott deliver de-cat to home address.......I get phone call from wife to say that I've had a very heavy false leg delivered and what is it ??

Cover completely blown and wife has serious shop in town when she see's the (£300 ish) invoice !!.

Midlife....

Seriously though, the Heywood and Scott kit did look very well put together !!

I have an 02 wrx, with full SS decat and TSL backbox. It did have a TSL firestorm but I removed it due to the embarrasingly loud noise.

With the above it's good for approx 250bhp but to make the most of the mods it's worth getting it Ecutek'd.

I had a postal remap from ScoobySport. Power should now be around 285bhp and is very drivable. Well worth doing. The service from Pete at SS was first class. Very helpful and prompt at answering emails!

Many thanks for the reply, thats a respectable increase. Did the fuel economy suffer drasticly and were there any other compromises after modding it up. Its a fantastic sports car and family car at the moment and I would hate to spoil that. Do you have any other experiences with your WRX?

My full Scoobysport decat (including up-pipe) makes a cracking noise, complete with pops and bangs.

It recorded 250bhp on Well Lane's rollers (249 really but 250 rounded up), but feels much quicker due to the power being available earlier in the rev range.
