Best down pipe?
#4
There's pros and cons to the various types of downpipe. There's an open bell-mouth (with and without splitter) and dual-dump pipes (where the dump tube joins close to, or far from - the main tube).
Open-neck pipes are claimed to allow earlier spool-up of the turbo and more low-range torque. Dual-dump pipes are said to give better top-end power at the expense of low-end grunt. Dual-dumps are said to be quieter as well, or at least can be quieter.
I went for a Scoobysport open-mouth downpipe, myself.

I've no experience of any other aftermarket downpipe, so can't really compare. However - a month or so after having the downpipe fitted, I've no regrets about my choice. Excellent noises (turbo and exhaust), early spool-up and good throttle response.
One benefit that I didn't appreciate in advance was that of listening to the turbo. The turbo becomes much more audible after fitting the decat d/p. You can hear it start to spin after about 2000 rpm, and quickly adjust to noticing how the turbo noise corresponds to the delivered power and, more importantly - the power the car is about to deliver.
The Scoobysport d/p had a reputation for being one of the louder downpipes. I've not found it to be excessively noisy at all. I've done all sorts of roads with the pipe fitted; A-roads, B-roads, daily commutes to work, long-haul motorway journies. In no circumstance have I found the car too loud or tiring.
My car has a full SS system, and also a Tek-2 remap from SS. The car now burbles nicely, and gives pops and bangs once the exhaust is warmed up. Nothing excessive, it just reminds you it's there...
