Today as i accelerated from some traffic lights i went through the gears as normal. When i came to select 5th gear it dosent select it. It kind of goes half way then stops. Also some times grinds a little.

Cars A my97 with 98k on the clock if that helps.

Any idea as what has happned as im hopeless with stuff like this and dont want to be fed loads of crap by whoever i bring it to. I expect i'll have to have 5th reconditioned.

Cheers John

Fubar'd synchro I'd say. You don't need to even get the box out of the car to have that sorted (iirc), as the 5th gear sits "outside" the box in the transfer casing.

Could be semi-pricey...the baulk ring which probably needs replacing is only 20 odd squid or so, but the gasket kit that's handy to have costed me around 70 up here in Sweden...

And some labour on that, and new gearbox oil.

Worst case scenario is that the synchro bits on the driven 5th gear has been damaged, then you'd need a new one of those as well...best advice would be to search a breakers then.
