I have WRX 94 with a STI 1 engine fitted with RA type b gear box.
A noise at the rear of the car happens when I slow down in gear.
This only happen then and not when under load. this is a 4:1 diff.
I noted that the RA may have a different ratio diff. Could this be the problem or is the diff worn out?
I've put the car up on a ramp and this is not the wheel bearings.
Any advise please...

If you have simply checked that it's not the wheel bearings by trying to rock the wheels, it doesn't work.

I had a rear wheel bearing making a racket, but without any play in the wheel. Replaced bearing and noise gone..

If its rear Wheel bearing take it on a road with some L and R hand bends on it. If it is a bearing you will hear it come and go when you go around either a left hand bend and a right hand bend as bearing loads up with sideways force off bend. Always works for me.

Hope it helps.??

I would certainly check that your final drives match. I'd have to check, but I don't recall the 4.111 being fitted to the RA's. IIRC, they are either 4.444's, or 3.9's on the early cars.

Mark.

Any more info on the diif ratios would help, I have the chance to change the 4.1. On the www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm. section 2.2.3 WRX/Sti cars states 4.44:1. but later model.
