Type R gear ratios
#1
Can anyone throw some light on this! Ive got a 96 type RA which im selling for a 99 Type R whats the differance in gear ratios between the two? Ive heard that the type R's top end is about 130, others say its about 150, not realy worried either way, just interested to know what to expect in terms of exceleration.

I have an MY00 RA which the ratios will be very similar to a 99 Type R. My 5th ratio is 20mph per 1000 rpm. Which means on the STi with an 8,000rpm redline you are looking at 160mph (20x8). Not advisable to run this though :
1) May lose licence
2) May lose engine

My MY99 Type R has a 19mph final gear which equates to about 158 by the rev limit at 8300ish
However I think it is commonly known that the death of a lot of Type Rs is constant high revs in top gears on dual carriagways and motorways!
The Type R is certainly not a commuting car.
It only really belongs on the twisties..
If you have to commute on the motorway/dual carr , I would suggest changinf the 5th to the longer 23mph type, however the general feeback from the list is that this does compromise the type r experience.

Thanks chaps that is all very usefull info, the type R will be ideal for me as i hardly ever go on a motorway anymore, its all A&B roads for me. Im glad its not quite as short in the gears as my 96 RA, superficial realy but it red lines at about 135, ive only done it once and it isnt an STI lump for a start.
