Alright guys, been looking through the search engine but have a question that is still not answered!

I can see that not alot of people like the Unichips. I was thinking about getting one but after reading posts in the search items, im thinking no now!

Anyway, most people go for the link ecu. However, does anyone go for a Link ecu and a boost controller?

Im asking this cause i know i wont remap it myself as i have no idea what im doing! So i thought about getting a boost controller, the ecu getting remapped and then it can be stored on the boost controller. Then i can run normal boost but also have the chance to run higher boost?

Well, what do you guys think?

Was just looking at the link ecu and £1300 all in. I know Link is meant to be quality but i wasnt thinking that much, unless i start going for real big power!!

I dont want to go massive power gains like you but 350 will be nice

So many chips, so many decisions. lol

I'm going down the Unichip & Boost controller route. Mainly cause I got them cheap second hand but they worked really well in the Scooby they came off.

I think I've read every thread that mentioned the Unichip on here. What I garther is that unless you want to change the boost yourself or go for mega gains in power the Unichip is fine.

What you have to ensure though is that you get it mapped by a very reputable place. I'm off to Power Station (350 mile round trip) as they fitted it to the Scooby before mine

What bhp do you reckon the unichip can handle then?

Not sure what it was producing before but afterwards the car came up at 262bhp at 1.3 bar on the rollers at PS, and about 276 torque. Other than a different downpipe the car was standard.

It's the Torque I'm after mainly.

You can't store the maps on a boost controller. The boost controller simply allows you to overule the ECU and force a certain level of boost.

You considered a Ecutek along with a boost controller?? Thats what im looking into at the mo.

Money can't get a EcuTEk cause they're only for MY99 onwards. Same as me with an MY97

I would hold fire as the ecutek is a much better bit of kit than the uni chip, plus I am far from convinced that there are any people in this country who offer the uni chip who are worth trusting.

To my knowledge, work is in progress on an ecutek equivalent but for the older cars. at least I get that impression after posting about it today on 22B.

Yeah i cant get the Ecutek.

After speaking to loads of tuning companies, the unichip doesnt seem worth it. TDI wanted to charge £300 + vat for just mapping.

Link seems very good but quite a bit of dosh.

Im looking at another ecu now that should be good. Wait till it goes on and i will let you know how it goes

Power Station quoted me £250-300+VAT for fitting and mapping which'll take a whole day to do (I wanted to do it on a Saturday but they finish at 3pm and they said they wouldn't have time to do it).

I'm running an HKS EVC4 boost controller by the way. It has a "mad" button which ups the boost another few notches (set by you) for a short time. I think most electronic boost controllers have this option though

What about the ScoobyECU guys, they do the remapped ECU's for the early cars.

The Scoobyecu, is that what David Wallis sells? I sent him an email about it but you have to do the remapping yourself and i dont have a clue about that! lol

Hi Money,

I've got a Link ECU with an HKS Boost controller.

You can't alter the boost once it's mapped (as far as I know) as the map is obviously optimised to those particular boost settings.

If you want to run lower boost just don't press the gas pedal as hard

If you want to go down this route, have a word with Bob at BRD.
IMHO it's well worth the dosh - stay in for 6 months or cancel your 2weeks in the sun this year!

Feel free to mail me off list. I have had Unichip on my last 4 cars and so have plenty of experience.

-NOTE: Any Mapped ECU is only as good as the technician doing the mapping....

The unichip has had a lot of bad press as there aren't many people that know how to map them properly and in some cases simply fitting blank or pre defined maps rather than tailored units for each individual car.

Owen Developments in Oxfordshire are commonly regarded by Dastek as having the most experience with the Unichip in the UK, as they have been mapping race cars with the Unichip for years.

Rich WIld, if you cant alter the boost on the Link ecu when its mapped, whats the point of the HKS boost controller?

5 Type R, i understand exactly what you are saying. I know it depends on the mapper. Have you heard or had any experience with TDI PLC? I emailed them and they said they would charge about £300 + vat to map an ecu.

There is obviously big bucks if you know how to remap an ecu!! Maybe i should think about this as a job! lol

I can only speak from personal experience and from what friends have experienced but TDI is not a place I would go to for anything.

Apparently the boost controller allows the turbo to build boost quicker because it "hangs onto the boost pressure" before it releases it to the wastegate actuator, making the cracking point of the wastegate occur slightly later.

It seems to work too
