crunching going into 5th

My 93 WRX has deleveloped a problem with the gear box !
When I change from 4th to 5th it crunches , but not all the time !
I have changed the gearbox oil to castrol syntrax , but when I changed the oil , I found two little metal block attached to the magnetic gearbox plug ! They are about 2cm long with a raised ridge on top . Is it the synco that has gone on 5th ? or something simple !!
