A plea for help and honest opinion here please.

Having owned my silver UK MY00 turbo 2000 now for about 5 months, I'm desperate to make some changes. Other than the Prodrive back box I had put on when bought the car from Pangbourne, it's all standard. It's probably the fault of the 802 ECU for the most part, but I've been fairly disappointed with the get up and go, or lack thereof.

A call to Greenlight has confirmed that it'll only cost me another £120 on the premium to take the car up to 280bhp, but 300bhp would be nice if it's possible on this kind of budget.

I've tried to take in as much info as I can from the board here, and I'm quite keen on a Tek2 or possibly 3 with a more appropriate turbo (TD05?). I'm guessing I'll also require a de-cat down pipe of one make or other, but will I have to replace the centre section as well? Will I need to improve other aspects of fuelling (pumps etc.) at this level as well? Plus little bits I would think I'd need like intercooler hosing... larger TMIC? Would rather not mount at the front if possible.

Anyway, you get the idea, any advice very much appreciated, including whether or not you think I'm dreaming and will need more money!!

Remap £650
Fuel pump £105
550 Injectors £260
TD05 FE £600
FMIC £850
Induction £180
Full exhaust £500
3 port solenoid £35
Knocklink and lambdalink £210
Boost gauge £35

More like £3500 plus labour - sorry. Pick and choose what you want, enough is plenty to break a gearbox (350 BHP and 350lbft approx with above) so perhaps a bit daft unless you want to add £2k for one that won't break. Then it is difficult to say how long the pistons and rods will cope with all this.

Choose your level and budget, and dial it back a bit for reliability. Skip the TMIC if you want safe reliable power. FMIC and turbo selection is the reason my engine has not blown up yet I believe, along with adequate fuel system for my needs.

I think it would be dangerous to think about that much power without considering brakes and handling!

I think some of JBs prices are a bit on the high side too.

Thanks John, your time is much appreciated. With the car being my daily drive, reliabilty is key really. Can anything over and above Tek 2 be supplied by post, or will it need rollers (next stop PE?)?

Looks like I've got alot more reading to do.

Would you believe it... another Andrew in Lancashire, what are the chances!

Yes you can get a bit more than a Tek 2 by post and it doesn't need rolling road time. But for big power you need a custom map and lots of supporting components. I listed middle of the road prices, it can be done cheaper, once you have already done it all and know where to buy Some things I've paid more than this, some less, just estimates to give you a realistic idea. I am sure you could do stuff for less, especially if you DIY and cut out some stuff.

Well, having said 300bhp, pub figures aren't my biggest priority... I just want the car to put much more of a smile on my face than it does right now, a significant improvement is required. I just don't want to fit a Tek2 and de-cat and then find that I'm left feeling 'well, I should really have invested a little more to make the most it while I was there' sorta thing. I'd rather spend more getting a safe 280-300 bhp-lb/ft, than a cheap 350. Again, not that I know what 300 feels like, but the other expensive option is to buy an Evo V, so if I can plan to make the Scooby start to look something like an Evo on paper, then I would think that's the sort of performance that will make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Probably.

I've probably been looking at this in the wrong way... question might really be; What to do to the car with up to £3000 for reliable power AND torque gains? Is it worth changing the turbo? Will the existing unit make use of a FMIC (coming around to the idea), can I stick with standard induction?

Talking

My set up is good enough to bring lots of smiles to my face

JB Tek 2.5
full scoobysport decat
dawes for better boost control and more aggressive spool up
STI V TMIC for a tad extra safety.

When she goes she really goes and in a comparison with a standard MY00 the other day she eased away nicely

You could do all of the above and add a FMIC to improve things further and still be under budget.

A big turbo is the way to go if you want big power and torque but ask yourself if you'll use it. When I really push my car I tend to be on very tight roads with the revs often dropping on some corners as low at 2500rpm. Not a problem for my turbo but would be an issue with a bigger blower.

Thumbs up

i also have a My00 and have recently spent a bit on engine mods:

full decat (tsl/blitz) £750
induction kit (k&n) £90
tek2 remap (PE) £625
= £1465

my figures now are 284bhp/279torque and its totally transformed the car, feels twice as powerful as standard

Thanks both... starting to think that perhaps that sort of set-up would do me for now... and I am quite tempted to move to a FMIC. I think you're right about actually being able to that large amount most of the time as well.

Peccy... how did you find PE as a company?

Why do you need a FMIC with 280 bhp? Isnt a TM good enough if you have a TD05 16G blowing at say 1.2 bars?

I think John said the FMIC was recommended for approx. 350bhp. If you say the TMIC is more than adequate for bellow 300 I believe you, I'm still learning, I just fancied the idea of FMIC for safer operation and future expansion... all comments appreciated though.

Is there any way to get the torque up a little to match the 280 'ish bhp figures?

Ex_pug,

if you get a good remap (mine was done my Mervyn @ Power Engineering) you should get torque figure in the 280's too. mine is 279 (with full decat and induction kit), however, before the remap the decat actaully lost me some torque over standard when low down the rev range, but now its much higher all way through the rev range, 4th pulls like 3rd used too etc.

in answer to your question about PE, their the best scooby place i been too, well worth the 400mile round trip! ill be using them next time.

Question

John (if ya still reading!), just been reading some threads about induction kits and came across your APS being fitted. Is that the one you still have? If so, were all the issues with MAF resolved? Are they available for top and front intercooler types?

I have the APS because I have an APS induction kit. If not remapping I suggest a K&N 57i.
