Can someone "in the know" shed some light on this please?

Can anyone confirm/deny the following please?
UK Turbos, both wagons and sedans should have TD05 turbos up to MY97 when they received the facelift and got TD04s. I was under the impression this was true but Jonny Gav says he's seen a pre 97 UK wagon with a TD04. I know the early WRX wagons had 90 degree TD04s which explains the power disparity, but did any early UK wagons have TD04s?
Also, Should a 95WRX have 4.111 or 4.444 diffs? I thought 4.111, but Jonny's has 4.444s which the MY97 onwards WRXs had.

Uk 5drs have TD05's (Mine does) wrx 5drs have TD04's with 90deg inlet.
I havent seen that many std to compare..

I had thought all wrx models had 4.11, with the 4.44 being for the sportier models...ie sti, ra etc etc.
Though, sayin that, I did remove a box from a MY00 wrx/sti auto, which had a 4.11 rear diff, so perhaps the autos vary a bit.
I also thought all 90deg turbos where TD05's ( apart from legacy's using an IHI VF12/14turbo )

Beware, some of the lowest geared cars (ie my Ra 6500/4th = 92mph) actually run 3.9 diffs. The gears in the box are much lower ratio.
The replacement Ra box I fitted shortly after I bought the car was also on a 3.9 with low ratio's.
If I fitted 4.44 diffs with my ratios, I'd be lucky to see 110 mph in 5th !!

I just had my 94 WRX box rebuilt to type R ratios but a miss understanding has left me with RA ratios and the standard diffs which now leaves me with a top speed of 120 mph at 7000 rpm which could possibly be the slowest top end of any Impreza in the UK, but it gets there bloody fast I will run it like this for a few months and see how I get on, turbo lag now appears to be non existant which is another bonus and as the Scooby has recently become a second car the fuel consumption wont be such an issue. What mph did you achieve on your quickest 1/4 mile run in your Scooby, I would imagine its well under 120 mph so I shouldn't have to worry on any of my 1/4 mile runs.

Stevie- I thought there wasn't such a car as an wrx sti Auto?

From reading various threads on here, it would appear that early WRXs had different final drives fitted almost at random......some WRXs hit 80mph @ 4k, others achieve 80mph @ 3.5k.
Don't know how you could tell one from another by just looking at it??

So Scoobert's 96 UK wagon has a TD04, My mate's 95 UK wagon has a TD05 and so does Dave Wallis's 94 UK wagon.

Later the balance was equalised and the same turbos used on botyh wagons and sedans. UK wagons always quoted the same power as the sedan so you'd think they should have the same turbo???
Anyone else shed any light on this?
The other day I saw an 97 R reg car with a MY99 front end and a pre97 engine (slanty intercooler) and a manual box but the chassis no. said it was a 94 car with an auto box. Now how about that for a multiple personality!

wagons also have a different compression ratio.. (slightly higher I believe, would have to check with mark or pat.)

My Sti 2 Wagon had 4.11 diff's and a TD05 and a high comp engine but that was because someone ticked a box on the STi goodie sheet. Early wagons were 8:1 as std but STi 4 were defo 9:1 as were alot of the others. STi5 back to 8:1. Its quite a mix and match. Wagons were "designated" towing vehicles and also alot of them were auto in Japan hence the higher comp ratio. Engines were lower in power output as well. Mine was rated as 260ps.

I ran a 118 mph best in the 1/4m so you're ok there ! You would be quicker with Sti gearing though. If you can miss out the shift up to 5th gear it's worth a little bit

Would the Sti4 have a different head volume to the 95 Ra ? The reason I ask is that I have just fitted a set of Sti4 pistons to my Ra (ex Mark Aigin so they've never seen much power ) and the bowl volume was 'almost' identical to my original pistons. The Sti4 pistons were slightly lower deck height (0.005") and the steel gaskets are approx 0.004" thicker than my original composite gaskets. Makes me wonder what my original compression must have been ??? Just wish I'd measured the head volume now

Andy, not completely sure but since the head gasket on the std Sti 4 is 1.6mm they could just have fitted a thinner one, I suspect the pistons are different though ... mine were in the STi2.
