I have had mixed answers as to whether a 99' gearbox will fit into my 98 car. I am aware that the gearboxes are slightly uprated so would prefer to replace with the newer box now a synchro has gone on mine. Experienced advice would be much appreciated please, no guesses!!

The fitting of the box is not a problem the later boxes have a 6 bolt fixing and yours will have a 4 bolt fixing other than tha it will go straight in.

it'll fit right in, the only difference being the bolt pattern on the block, like the first gentlemen said you'll have 2 empty bolt holes as the phase 1 blocks used 2 studs and 2 bolts.

It will, but one of the missing holes is also the lower starter motor bolt on teh newer box. If you fit a newer box, to an older car, then you wil either have to use only one starter motor bolt, or arrange a second fixing for the lower bolt. Tapping and Helicoiling the hole would be one option, though i can think of many other rougher ways of doing it

i forgot about that, on the phase 1 tranny cases they use a stud on the starter where as the phase 2's use a bolt that goes thru the backside of the block, you could do as he suggestd and helicoil it which will provide you the lower starter(either bolt or stud) mounting position.

AFAIK only the Phase 2 used the extra mountings 99 onwards, using the lower of these mountings as a starter bolt.

If the lower starter fixing a 14mm headed bolt, then it goes rite through to the block as per Ph2, if its a 17mm nut on a stud, then it doesnt, as per Ph1.
