Cool

Ok, here's my best take on some of the turbo story:

TD05 - All non Japanese versions 1, 2 and 3. Also, all Japanese versions 1 and 2 plus (I think...) non STI version 3
TD04 - All non Japanese market versions 4 and 5
VF22 - Japanese market WRX versions 4, 5 and 6 (plus some 22b's)?
VF23 - STI version 3 (1996)
VF24 - STI version 4 (1997)
VF28 - STI version 5 and 6 (1998-1999)
VF29 - WRX version 7 (2000)
VF30 - STI version 7 (2000)

Not sure about the Type R's, RA's, V limiteds etc. They may just be the same as their respective STI's (Type R's) and non STI's (Type RA's).

Cheers Scoobysnacks, and Toerag you are welcome to add Foresters etal to the list. I think post october 96 models (MY97) ran TD04's?
Keep the info coming as it might be useful to someone or just for the curious like me?

Edited to ask if anyone has any info on what the World Rally cars run?

FYI, Thought this might be handy for someone as to what turbo a scooby should have.

The VF22 is the largest VF turbo with a 48mm compressor housing and a 5 blade compressor wheel. The exhaust housing is a P20. This is the standard turbo on STi Version 2 (1996) and first 100 of the 22B (1998).

The VF23 is similar to the VF22 but the compressor housing is 46mm and incorporates a 7 blade design compressor wheel. The exhaust housing is the same as the VF22. This is the standard turbo on the STi Version 3 (1997).

The VF29 is similar to the earlier VF28. The compressor housing is 46mm and incorporates a 7 blade compressor wheel. The exhaust housing is a quicker spooling P18. This is the standard turbo on the STi Version 6.

The VF30 has a bigger compressor than the VF23 at 47mm. It incorporates a 9 blade compressor wheel. The core is a divided thrust bearing and has a P18 exhaust housing. This is the standard turbo on the New Age Sti.

The VF34 is similar to the VF30 but has improved spool up due to roller bearing design. This is the standard turbo on the New Age Sti RA Spec C.

The VF35 has identical internals as the VF30 and it uses divided thrust bearings. However, the exhaust housing is a P15 which means this turbo will have fantastic spool characteristics. This turbo is standard on the new WRX Type RA.

VF22 on a MY96 STi..... are you sure. I'd say it was a TD05 (with 90degree inlet).

Question

Got an answer from 22b.com yet?
I'm pretty sure my MY98 WRX (non STI) has a VF22, but didn't think any STI's or 22B's did...

It is rumoured the first 100 22's had VF22's, thereafter had Vf23's.

The VF24-29 are all virtually the same, slightly different wastegate specs.

the Vf30 was used on the new age STi until 10/01..there after, all new age STi's got the Vf34 (which was originally only fitted to the RA spec C as noted above).

The VF35 is the turbo fitte to Sti models in Oz 9and maybe elsewhere)

I should have called this thread a DISCUSSION for a definative list. Still working on the TD's if any peeps can help?
From what I could find, the first 100 22B's had VF22's and moved on to the VF23's.

I just started this thread because there seems to be a lot of confusion as to what Scooby had what Turbo and I was curious to find out the facts and put together a bit of a list.

The UK STis have a mixture of VF30s and 35s mainly the latter though.

My 96 Type RA had a TD05 unit on it.

Just a small comment to VF29 which basically were for JDM.
The VF30 were used for STI's up to Jan2002 when it was replaced
by VF34.

With regard to the type of entry, it came about with the change from the EJ20G to the EJ20K engine... both JDM and UK single turbo cars up to some time in 1996 ran MHI TD05H or IHI VF12 (RHB52) turbos. Thereafter it gets confusing Now, who else has seen a car running a VF37 ?

Cheers,

Pat.
