rattling from gearbox
#1
Guy I need your help, i have a 2.0 GL AWD, recently i can hear a rattling sound comming from the gear box,
well i think its the gear box the noise is comming from, anyway in first gear during 0-10mph its quite bad
but then it quites down, if you change gear to 2nd gear you can hear it, but once in third it goes quite.
any idea wot this may be???

i have had this on my turbo. sorted it yesterday.
In my instance i took the gearknob off, took the gear gaitor and housing off and had a look. there is a metal trim that goes around the transmission tunnel. In 1st and 2nd the lever and the gearlinkage was touch in this metal trim. Drove the car with it off and you could see it.
I just took the trim off and cut a bit out. then put it back. rattle has gone for now
hope that helps.
to test, hold the lever whilst it is rattling, if it rattles and you then hold the lever firm and the rattling stops, then it is probably that.

if i have time and if you can wait i will take some pics tonight.
the metal trim holds a rubber seal in place that stops crap and noise coming into the cabin.
I forgot to say i have an adjustable quick shift on mine, but it was always notching and rattly in 1st and 2nd, even before the quickshift.
Just take off what you think necessary. Thats all i did.

sorry did not have time, plus i could not get in the garage as we have had a delivery of new windows for the house.
but this is an old picture. you can see the metal bracket.
open the lid behind the gearlever, ther are 2 screws (covered with caps) at the this, unscrew them, then pull up from that end, this removes the handbrake housing, then pull the gearlever one up seperatly, be gentle but firm (unscrew the gearknob 1st, its a really long thread, so takes a while), then you will have tthis picture.
sit there changing gear and you may see it catching the bracket.
hope that helps
