Block isnt a problem, the newer ones just have more fixings.
I think Steve...SMG mentioned he had adaptors made to swap between Ph2 and Ph1 manifolds. Might be worth giving him a shout.
Also IMO the timing belt tensioners on the new engines are crap, as many people who have had belts replaced, for them to have jumped teeth only days after will tell you. Id replace the tensioner assembly with the old one.
Why the change to the newer motor anyway?? Is there any real benefits to make it worth the hassle?

I know people have done bits of this, like block, heads and so on.

My main concern, is idle control valve, and the complete difference in types from phase 1 to phase 2.

Short of getting a 97-98 manifold and welding flanges from a phase 2 manifold on, does anyone have any better ideas?

if you do however swap the whole engine for phase 2 type, make sure you check about the bellhousing fixing points. i think i remember somebody mentioning that the phase two has six bolts rather than four.
ours have the four, with dowel half way up each side of the housing. this may well be where the bolts go on later models.

just thought id mention it, worth checking

I know it goes in the other way around, as some guys on I-club put a legacy short engine into a bug eyed wrx.

Think you probably just end up with a few bolt holes surplus to requirements

I agree Stevie, I'm just looking at options for things like the heads, manifold, whole engine, rebuild etc etc

I'm sorted how to do the ISCV if I end up going phase 2 route. Phase 2 heads and manifolf seem to flow better, which is of minor appeal. THe main thing is there may be a phase 2 engine ready to drop in.

hmm, more trouble than it's worth.

My phase 2 manifold, throttle body, fuel rails, 440cc injectors are most definitely for sale.

Dowser currently has the winning bid, so will go to him unless someone local really wants it.

I can split the rails and injectors possibly.

auction? Dowser, you still haven't met the (already reduced) asking price!!

Still prefer not to have the hassle of international postage on the manifold, as it means taking it to a depot bleedin miles away.

But you'll probably get it anyway!
