I always look at induction kits with some negative opinions as the way i see it is that its in the engine bay (for most types) which means its getting the heat from the engine, isnt the point of an induction kit to put COLD air into the engine and not warm air?
The airbox on the other hand has a direct feed (on some cars) from the exterior of the car, so if you were going to fit an induction kit (which isnt really a good idea on post MY99's) then it would have to be in the wing to get the coldest air (and the wettest water).
Just my opinion

If you're going for pipercross it's well worth paying an extra tenner and getting the 'vector' - better cone and most importantly more noise!

You def need to cold feed it though, easy to make own from existing bits

Hello,

I used to have a KN-57i kit fitted to my Impreza.
After I heard of all the problems with MAF-sensors, I decided to remove the kit and replace the standard OEM airbox with standard panelfilter.

After the replacement to standard filter, I noticed the gain of power, the motor was running more smooth and it was picking up much better.

If I may advise you, keep to your standard panel filter.
No problems with MAF and the engine is running much more smooth.

I also had a cold air pipe running to the open filter.

With regards,

Hans

Hans

Is that a Turbo you had or a sport, as I have heard that you are best to not fit an Induction kit to a Turbo, but a sport would be OK.

not to be picky, but the my99/00 pick their air from the engine bay as well. The feed just goes into the wing and then to the air box.

The black plastic piece behind the headlamp on the turbo side of the car, connects to the resonator in the wing, the resonator then feeds the standard air box.

Therfore it pics air from just behind the headlight under the bonnet. Still a chance of it being warm air IMO, and therefore no different to an induction kit.

I have a link ecu on mine so not bothered about the MAF

The Pipercross on the MY99 and later cars has been known to kill the MAF. I wouldn't recommend it TBH!

Mass air flow sensor.

Steven, it comes through the wing direct into the airbox, the degree of any heat soak with the velocity of the air is very small. The air is prevented from seeing any engine heat due to fact it is a closed system...

Hans,

Agreed, mine did the same.

Are you guys telling me that the K&N 57i induction kit that i've bought (but not fitted yet) for my MY95 turbo is a waste of money?

DBM it comes from the engine bay 1st though. It does not source the air from the inner wing!

cononcars, its not a waste of money, the older (pre99) cars had different MAF sensors that were stronger.

K&N should be fine on a 95 car. Thing to do is remove resonator and add a cold air feed from the front somewhere to the hole the standard airbox is fed through.

Er,

The only hole in the airbox is the one that connects to the inner side of the wing does it not

here you got a picture where you can understand how the air is flowed:Egine bay to resonator inthe wing to air box.

Am I right in thinking that a K&N induction kit is ok(ish) with a MY97 (the older, stronger MAF sensor)?

Oh and I agree that the standard system effectively sources it's air from the engine bay...
