How loud is yours

Thanks to my mate (cheers Mark) I now know how close I am to the legal noise limit.
Exhaust is a SS Downpipe (lagged) with 3" BPM centre and Twister3 backbox.
Legal limit (I think) is 104db
The tests were done at a standstill with the engine at 4500rpm
With the bung fitted it reached 99db
Without the bung it managed 103db

OK Mike maybe not, but then I don't want to go over the top. You know like fitting HUGE rear wings and things. Want to keep my car looking subtle
Oh and has that little old woman recovered after you dumped behind her.....
GOD I hope its not 90db, can't imagine how I'd get it down that low. Maybe thats at tick over, when mine was at 85db (I think).

What is the score with the legal limit,
I have a decat dp + blitz nur spec, (no bung)
I was at stockley a couple of weeks ago when the old bill turned up and started turning all the cars over.
Without using any testing equipment i was issued with a noise abatement notice, basically they said because it was a non standard exhaust it is louder than then manufacturer intended and therefore i was given this notice.
I am tempted to contest it as i thought that the exhausts were alright as long as they dont exceed a certin db level ??
Anyone know where i stand on this
Rich

Rich,
I always thought the same as you that it was OK unless you exceeded a certain db level.
Might be time to check with my local police just to confirm this.

Ahh but Steve, its different when its a hobby, isn't it?
I know the limit for rally cars is 100Db at4500rpm. My SS downpipe, self made straight through centre and SS back box was 96Db at 4500 rpm. Good job we've got a half empty industrial estate near us!

Steve,
No surprise at all mate. People in the office can hear when I arrive at work and the car park is about 200 metres away. Oh and half my street use my car as an alarm clock, Daves car has started therefore its 08:15 time to get up

IIRC, the legal limit states 95dB, using A weighted measurements, at 1m from the tailpipe (at 45º from the angle it is pointing), standing on open hard surface (tarmac etc), whilst holding at 2/3 of maximum revs in neutral.
For reference, about a week ago, we measured a stock WRX giving 78dB at 5000rpm on this measure. At that time, the interior noise was 66dB(I have some sound deadening inside the car, that may have helped this slightly)
The reason I did this is to see how much louder my new APS system will be once it arrives and I have fitted it. Also did a large number of other tests to get some definitive comparison. Given a few days notice (to borrow the meter), I can perform similar tests on anyone who is really interested and who can come to me.
Knowlesy - I assume the 120dB was with the genuine straight through system, i.e. a pipe with no silencer, resonators or anything? I have heard stories about you
