I have just ordered my Magnex downpipe and wondered what are the pro's and cons (if any) of using exhaust wrap..

Thanks in advance

A non-techie answer.

Pro's
Lower noise.
Reduced loss of exhaust energy (supposedly better scavenging).
Reduced under bonnet heat.

Con's
Not nice stuff to apply (poor soft hands all mangled)
Catches oil and crap from road, so smells a bit.
Virtually impossible to apply on the car - do it before you fit it.

Hope that helps.

Done it & it doesn't make a lot of difference. Well, nothing obvious anyway ... but if you have some wrap left over from the headers, it's a great place to store it

if your going to run without the standard heat shield, you'll soon wish you had wrapped them, you can hold your DP (just about) after you've driven it if you've got exhaust wrap on it, thats how much heat is retained by the wrap.

under bonnet heat is not going to help inlet temperatures (not to mention your brake reservoir and steering column joint which are very close to the DP)

heatshield is bolted to the original DP, i'm guessing it might go back on if your car is quite new and the nuts & bolts are not rusted, mine had to be hacked off with no chance of going back on so wrap was essential

I did mine on the car - be patient.

Apparently for best fit - soak it in water first and then wrap - it will then shrink in place and fit better.

Also - only one layer is need - you don't need layers and layers.

Trout

PS I found out about soaking it AFTER I put it on

I've got wrap on mine and you can practically touch the downpipe, whereas on my old scoob without wrap, you could feel the heat from about 2 feet away, so it must make a difference.

Wrap! Best is the brown which has to be lightly wetted. Do it before fitting D/P and refit the h.s. Will stink for a week or so. White also available, used dry but not as good and not as tight fitting and secure. Use plenty tie wire.

And spray it with hi-temp paint afterwards - at least offers *some* protection from the stink after driving in the wet

is it such a good idea to trap all that heat in the metal thats made in such a way as to only take a certain temp in the first place only a thought?!?!?!?

Cool

Cannot report any down side to the higher exhaust temps but would be interested to hear from anyone with first hand experience.

Wrapping the down pipe will not make any real difference to the egt between engine and turbo which is what matters. I would wrap headers and up pipe but you need to allow the down pipe to cool so wrap the top half and leave the rest as a suggestion.
