As Paul is on a night shift he has asked me, his girlfriend to post this for him.

He is getting a down pipe fitted and it is hitting against the gear box/ cross members. The down pipe came off a P1 and his is a MY97 so is this what the problem would be. Apparently it seems to go off at an angle.

He is seeing the mechanic in the morning so any help tonight would be great.

Cheers

LJ

I'm not a rocket scientist but I think the P1 turbo may be slightly out of alignment to the earlier models, hence the fouling the cross-member. Again I may be wrong but having just renewed my turbo & taken my downpipe off it would need to be well out of alignment for it to foul anything.

I hope this helps

Something is bent. All downpipes should be interchangeable. Is the exhaust of a damaged/crashed car?

PG/LJ,

I'm also pretty sure that all downpipes are interchangable.

Something isn't right. As far as I can remember, the downpipe should sit against the gearbox casing, I think the original cat pipe is bolted to the gearbox.

I presume Ron got the original downpipe off to compare the new decat against the original?

I will be home next Tuesday and will manage to have a go then if required.

Chris

Thumbs up

That'll explain why I had a bolt missing from the gearbox that also has the intercooler bracket bolted too the gearbox. My downpipe only slots into a bracket on the cross-member. I had a look last night and my pipe isn't near the gearbox.

I also didn't realise that other turbos (TD05/TD04/VF from P1) would allow for interchanging downpipes.....you learn something everyday

Hope you get it sorted.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but here's my experience.

The standard downpipes have a cross-member that is bolted to the gearbox. Scoobysport's replacement doesn't... (Dunno for others)

So if you're fitting a standard bit, you'll need to bolt that into the hole.

Also, there's a bracket underneath the car which you need to lift a lug on the pipe over in order to get everything positioned correctly.

Oh, and don't do what I did and forget the centre gasket

the my 97 and p1 should be the same, i fitted a ss downpipe to a my97, removed it and refitted it to a p1 no probs, the small bracket that bolts to the gearbox wouldnt line up on either car though
