Engine feels flat above 6K

MY97 UK spec - Scoobysport BB,ITG Panel filter,ported ex manifold, car runs Optimax.
Don't know wether I'm expecting too much from it here, but when accelerating hard through the full rev range the power flattens right off above 6K. The way I see it is that I should have another 1000 rpm to play with according to the tacho. Other cars I've had (non-Scooby) were building power right up to (and into) the redline.
I haven't had the car dyno'd - Not sure what point that would serve other than to confirm my feeling.
I recon it's the exhaust system restricting the airflow.
Anyone got any comments/thoughts.
