My oomy is in garage for an upgraded clutch(4 paddle job) the clutch was the usual juddery one, when the bellhousing was taken off there was asbestos dust all over the place.
paddle clutch and uprated cover was installed(prodrive one) and it is still juddering, all parts such as flywheel and bearing show no signs of abuse.
any ideas of what could still cause judder????

regards
dave

Well, a paddle clutch will not usually engage smoothly. Did you have the flywheel re-surfaced?? It should really be done when fitting a new clutch, as imperfections will make it very juddery. Also, apparently changing the clutch fluid of something like a DOT 5 spec, can help, or maybe its just because its renewed.
I assume you fitted a corresponding pressure plate with the new clutch?? If its was an old one, again, the friction surface would need to be as new, or it will make it judder.

yes,all new components inc pressure plate, flywheel is mint and true, (engineer doesnt think it needs skimmed ),both on face and at crankshaft side.the original clutch was well worn hence the amount of dust,is this normal? paddle clutch was recomended after seeing the damage caused by the original,an organic clutch would end up the same way

I'm sorry to dissagree with your engineer, but unless the flywheel has been put on a lathe, and the surface skimmed, it's more than possible that it could be slightly out.

Add that to a 4 paddle clutch plate, that are renouned for being snatchy, and it could well "judder".

Mark.

the pressure plate is heavily sprung, would this not help the "grabbing "properties of the clutch and sort out the judder?

also the reason for the paddle is that the organic will just ware through and as there is no "airflow "in the bellhousing as any holes that should be there as in previous models have been filled the dust just mounts up and re solidifies(aparently subaru tried this mod to stop watter ingrss into gearbox which may have caused judder before)

I have read that surface grinding gives a much better friction surface. After seeing both finishes, I would agree. It is a much smoother finish than that with a lathe The imperfections would not necesessarily be visible to the eye. Get it machined, then there will be no doubts.

Wink

depends on the lathe operator and the tool used.

Average user surface grinder... 1 Lathe 0
