hi, im new to the scooby world, ive recently brought a my98 british turbo with 42k,fssh ect.The past few days the gearbox has started to feel rather notchy and it has been crunching a bit when put into 4th gear above 55mph(ish),it does it more when changing down the box into 4th.Below 55 it goes in great but it is still a bit notchy. Is this a common problem, ive read that it could be down to the oil,or is it a tired gearbox(i hope not!).Any info would be appreciated. p.s it had a full service(with cambelts ect)a couple of months ago if its any help.

I have a similar problem with my97 fssh Subaru boxes are notoriosly notchy. Complained to the dealer on numerous occasions but they always said it was fine. Had a new scoob as a courtesy car and to be fair that was quite notchy to.

You could try switching to Castrol Syntrax or other good semi-synth.

Syntrax cured the notchiness of my gbox

Try keeping the revs at, or near the level they will be when you select the new gear. This should help the gears mesh a bit and stop grinding, reducing ware.

Yep - 3rd Scoob and all have notchy gearchange to varying degrees. Crunching sounds like synchros going.

Question

Am thinking of replacing the oil in my Legacy GTB for this reason. How much do you need (my manual is in Japanese )? Is it an easy job? Drain plug on bottom and pour down the dipstick hole, or is there a trick to it? Hard to even see the gearbox with 2 turbos in the way...

Oh, and where do I get Castrol Syntrax - any high street store, or am I going to be paying postage ?

easyrider - how much oil did it take? Does Syntrax come in only one variety, or are there different viscosity options?

ive put in 3.5litres,which is what the manual said, but it didnt show max on the dipstick,it was mid level?--maby my garage floor isnt perfectly level.
i think syntrax is a universal gear oil,the grade is SAE75W-90(which is what subaru specify)+its API GL3,4&5.Bloody good stuff, which is probably the reason it costs £10 a litre! but well worth it in my book.

I think that Halfords etc are just a rip off, which is why its so expensive. The Autodata manual says 4 litres for an Impreza, and 3.5 for a legacy. I just fitted a box and put 4 litres in it ( MY98 UK Impreza box ) Either way fill it up til the max.
