I reckon you've got to mount it right in the middle of the bumper.

The only other option would be blanking plates for the fog lights and go Evo style......

Like this

Classic shape has a thicker section of bumper so there is less overlap with the grills.

I have a plan!!!

I have a 'slightly' smaller plate due to front mount, my plan is to fabricate a hinged front plate so that it swings to a horizontal plane @ 60+mph

Any thoughts???

any thoughts?
Yes.. you'll be in for buying a new number plate and getting the paint redone after it rips off at 62mph!

We were discussing this at the meet in Derby last night..

I think the best place has to be on the bottom of the front lip part of the Spoiler... ?

I am thinking about moving mine there..... despite no FMIC

I have remounted mine - a square one Evo/Alfa 156 style.

I have cut away all the mounting stuff in front of the rad and so the FMIC is totally exposed to the airflow.

This is critical for two reasons - I have paid for the intercooler and so don't want 20% of it covered up.

Also - with an FMIC the water temps rise - mine went from 82-86 driving average to 92-94 average. With the number plate and mount completely cutaway - the temps are back to 82-86 driving average. So practical, pragmatic, performant and legal.

Good point about rise in water temps with FMIC's

On track, we noticed that removing the number plate from its' original position in front of the cooler dropped water temp by 8 degrees. With it in place we were seeing 102 degrees.

Doesn't help, that on my car at least, the radiator is the last thing to get any air... intercooler, condensor comes first.

trout you need an sti 6 front spiler for that. It will also help you get more air in IMO

Is it just pot riveted or screwed on?

Think i will go for the sticker effect and cut away the original mounting plate.

P20,

even tho' I am not speaking to you for not buying my turbo - if you look carefully at the bottom of the mesh is an ally strip that effectively boxes in the bottom of the I/C, acting as a lower lip spoiler.

The Sti 6 spoiler would not work as it fits over the base STi 5 front - and as you can see I have cut that away as it covered around 25% of the intercooler.

Trout

PS I originally tried to buy a sticky number plate and Les Smith told me they were a) illegal, and b) could not supply me with plate without driving license, photo id and V5 doc - how's that for complete bollocks

Sorry - forgot - plate is screwed on using a bag of number plate screws from Halfords who made up the plate as well - it was £10.

JGM, why do you feel that it would end in tears with a 'hinged' plate?

David/P20

Sticky plates are availabe from one of our users.... regplates@aol.com

They are proper reflective backings and legal fonts so the only problem with them is if you mount them in a stupid place

that looks a massive fmic trout, major cutting required, what make is it?

I went the bonnet route on mine, doesnt look quite so odd on a white car though, specially when you take off the black border of the plate (or get it made without) any graphics/sticker shop can make you up a stick on plate, didnt have half the grief you did

have been tihnking about ditching my driving lights and going evo/alfa route as i dont need the extra lighting capabilities with the morettes fitted, tho it does make it all kinda match.....

My other thought was to put mine on like tangos which was fitted the lip of bumper and sti6 spoiler, will also stop the damn thing stone chipping like mad... wonder how he attached it...

edited to add the front of tangos old car, now i know how he stuck it on, its another sticker one
as for cars running stickers, just look at xk8's mx5's, countless kit cars etc.

The number plate is screwed onto a *rear* number plate mount, which is screwed to the underside of the bumper *mouth*

Pete,

once I decided on the fitting strategy very easy to fit - six hours overall

It is an HKS

They look smaller on other cars as at least 30% of the I/C is covered by Plate and front spoiler - as you can see on mine I got rid of all that - huge improvement in water temps and intercooler performance!
