If I replace the turbo on my car with a different one, will I need to change the brain to accept the new turbo or not?

Probably - depending how differnt it was.

You certainly would not optimise any investment in a turbo unless you have a mappable ECU or equivalent. There are those that advocate bolt on turbos - it is less than ideal.

I ran a vf23 with PPP ecu and Dawes for several months. Ran very well, I was surprised.

Of course, as mentioned, you don't get the best out of it and it's only to be recommended as a stop-gap measure until you can remap the ecu.

If you're still using factory boost control, you'll need to move to an external boost controller of some sort. Factory map is optimised for OE turbo - you'd be amazed at how unsuited this will be for any aftermarket turbo!

On my car (which also had a stainless manifold with the 23), there was also a big, fat lean spot between 2k4 and 2k7 (not dangerous, in this config car didn't spool until 3k5). Putting more fuel in here has increased driveability by 8 million percent

Use a Dawes, Knocklink and AFR gauge if you do it.

Lol! Definitely follow John's advice before doing anything. I'd also recommend ripping out the Superchip bleed and FCD and fitting a proper one (that just raises fuel cut, rather than disabling it) with a Dawes.....

If it's a my99/00 car, remap the OE ecu to suit the new turbo is the best approach. See www.ecutek.co.uk
