New big end fitted. (The Subaru ext warranty was very very cheap)

Is there anything special I can do to make sure it lasts for the life of the car (or for another 50,000m+?) I know how the new STi7 owner must feel like as I have to run it in for 1000m

What I do:-
1) Subaru services on the button
2) Use best oil available
3) Let it cool down after being driven
4) Never thrash it when cold
5) Keep the cats in the exhaust (backbox changed)

What else would you recommend ?
- ???

Already done enough praying that the warranty people would cover it!

Need some practical, 'preventitive maintenance' ideas please !

Fit Knock Link. If Jap Import only run on Optimax+1.5mls/l NF or bottle of Millars Octane Boost per tank of about 55l.

cats?

if you want to run modified engine, you probably benefit from changing oil between subaru services too.

decat exhaust more likely to prevent engine damage is it reduces back pressure that can lead to detonation.

Pavlo

I thought (wrongly) that by removing cats this sometimes creates sensor problems, and some back pressure is needed for the turbo anyway ?

If I went for a centre section only (like in PPP) with resonator but left the rest alone, could this help a bit ?

Any advice helpful

Question

Pavlo: Why does a de-cat exhaust reduce the chances of det? Am I missing something here?

as written in my original post.

cats in an exhaust add to the exhaust back pressure, exhaust back pressure is on the whole bad, especially on a turbo engine, turbos do NOT need back pressure to work.

So anyway, exhaust back pressure increases the likelyhood that some exhaust gas gets left in the cylinder, meaning less fresh charge will come in, which will lead to decreased cooling, increased cylinder temps, mre change of det, and less fresh charge to burn (less power).

A full decat exhaust also allows a little more advance to be run, in the similar way to a less restrictive (generally bigger) turbo.

Since fully sorting the breathing on my car (manifold/turbo/decat), I no longer see any knock-correction. I put this down to reduced EGT....which I can't prove, 'cos I don't measure it, lol!
