Question

Question is are they the same item painted in different colours or is the P1/STi5 one slightly bigger/more efficient/etc?

Any advantage in fitting a P1 intercooler to my UK MY00?

The P1/STi intercooler can directly replace the standard UK MY00 one. It does have a larger area to cool air.

I have one fitted to my MY00 and it has made a difference to boost and to reducing the effects of heatsoak when in traffic.

Don't forget to get the uprated Samco hoses with it (and if lucky the metal Y piece that replaces some of the black plastic on the MY00).

I've fitted one to my car. They are exactly the same size, but the STI part has a different shaped end plate that should allow more air into the top right corner of the intercooler. Not more than 5% better I wouldn't think, but every bit counts !

If you get given the STI hoses with the intercooler, you shouldn't need any Samco's, since the STI cast 'Y' piece looks better flowing than even the Samco.

Sadly, I changed my turbo and intercooler at the same time, so haven't got before and after dynos for only the intercooler. But I am happy with the overall result.

Cheers

Thanks Steve

Unfortunately I didn't get the alu Y-piece (been searching for one for ages anyway ). I already have the Samco pipes anyway so they'll do.

I've got the car booked into PE for a RR next week sometime anyway as I've just fitted a PPP ECU too and wanted a comparison against my earlier runs there. I suppose I could wait until then to change the intercooler and get a before and after...... Maybe they'd do me a special deal on 2 runs.

Don't expect stunning results in this weather though. I've dropped 25-30BHP between Feb and now, just on ambient temperature.

Best strategy is to offer to make the tea (high value currency), and wash up all the cups while Merv swaps the intercooler !

I was at 305BHP in Feb with 8-10°C ambient.
I am at 280BHP at the moment with 27°C ambient and slightly richer mixture (new MAF).

However, I am able to hold my boost much longer, and although the lines are 25BHP apart up to 5500 RPM, they converge after this. I.e. I've gained 20-25 BHP up top, but won't be able to compare properly until ambient temperatures drop - PE don't use an ambient temp fudge factor when power testing, so what you see is what you get, if you see what I mean.
