I have a STI V Type R which over the weekend lost power and ended up sounding like a bag of nails. First of all the car seemed to stutter under full acceleration, but I thought nothing of it at the time as I was on a badly surfaced back road and I may have backed off the throttle on a bump. I then noticed a noise like the exhaust was blowing and as I’d just had the DP swapped out and back in for the MOT assumed this to be the cause. The car felt absolutely normal, no vibration, no loss of smoothness etc. Then on the M’way the car suddenly lost power under a constant throttle at 50 mph. The sound was a like a bag of nails, as if something was broken but without much in the way of vibration reaching me through the pedals. The car didn’t die and will start so hasn’t seized (at least not totally).

From the above can anyone with direct experience of having this kind of work done, advise as to where to take it ? I live near Leeds but don’t mind where it has to be taken. I want to take it somewhere that can diagnose and fix regardless of whether the problem is a turbo or engine internals. If it is engine internals that have failed I would like the garage to be able to recommend, supply and fit uprated parts as required?

Any ideas of likely rebuild costs should the engine require a rebuild ?

Thanks in advance,

Chris.

Try calling Dave West on 01844 274652. He is not local but knows a man with a lorry!

Prosport/C&K in Manchester should be able to sort you out.

They came down to me and collected mine on their flatbed so I guess would do the same.
will probably start it up and give a general diagnosis (with me it was, "turn it off it's fcuked")

Can supply and fit any uprated parts you want.

Hi,

Sounds like your big end has gone... which seems to be very very common on your model of car.... it seems to happen at relativly low milage too....

I was speaking to a lad from near where i live who has an STI V type R and he had the exact same problem think it was only around 30,000 miles.... He got a bill for £4000 to do the whole lot icluding engine removal/refitting e.t.c, he also didnt have his car for a long time.... as some of the parts have to be ordered from japan....

Good luck mate...

But at least when its done you will have a nearly new engine...

Dan

Does it sound bad all the time? Is it more noticeable when cold?
Does it only sound bad when the engine is under load ie trying to make boost?

Think ive seen someone on here a while back who was selling a P1 and had had an engine rebuild at lowish mileage due to that problem.....

Are P1's mapped to run on 100RON fuel...???

I'm told sti 5 and p1's both run the same fuel maps. But the p1's ecu can retard the igntion further
