How necessary is an additional oil cooler ?

I know the standard car has an oil/water heat exchanger but I have no idea how efficient this is ?
I'm intending doing more track days with my car and was considering fitting an oil cooler. As modern synthetics will run happily at 120C+ I wondered if an additional cooler was really necessary ?
Anyone have any 'track day' temperatures for oil before and/or after fitting an oil cooler ?
thanks
Andy

I have never monitored oil temps, but as far as I am aware, they do run substantially hotter than the water, more than 120degC I think. The std one works well, coz its compact, apparently helps the warm up cycle of the engine, and once warmed, does help to cool the oil. I do have a funny feeling that a proper oil cooler would help the life of the oil, and possibly contribute towards a longer big end life. After all, if people put aftermarket oil coolers on N/A cars, then how important would they be on a high power turbo car?????
N/A cars dont really ever make any power, except in a few extreme cases. I think an oil cooler would be a wise investment, especially for those doing a lot of track days, or very hard driving.

From what I have seen on here, oil temps generally don't tend to be an issue unless you go for a FMIC. Obviously each car is different, so an oil temp gauge is the first step.
If you do decide to do it, I would talk to Think Automotive who are the UK importer for Mocal - their prices tend to be more competitive.
Thanks

hi andy
with my scoob, per the front mount i was getting 95+ water temps and after the intercooler i was getting 105+
i have never measured the oil temps but i thought they will be higher than the water temps by about 10-15%.
so i fitted an oil cooler.
again i was runing 1.3-1.4bar with a VF 23 most of the time anyway.
at the boost level you are runing, you would think that your oil temps will be higher. maybe?!
i hope this helps

Thanks guys. Sam, I should have bought that oil cooler from you earlier when you had your garage clear out ! too late now.
I'm fitting an oil temp gauge tomorrow, the sump is conveniently empty after its Knockhill spill !!!
What is the recommended maximum temp for Motul/Mobil 15/50 ??
My bike engined car runs up to 135C and it has a big cooler
cheers
