Nope..... Front Diff and Gearbox share the same GL5 type oil.

The rear Diff uses specific LSD gear oil. Take a 1l oil tub to your local dealer and ask them for some. They will only charge you a few quid for it. From memory it needs about .8/.9 l to fill, ideally thru a syringe

Make sure you use fully synthetic... it makes hell of a difference for gear changes

And why would the rear of most subarus require a different oil?? The majority have a viscous coupling which is a sealed unit, and oil type would have no effect on this at all. The STI plate type LSD ( not fitted to all models though )would require an oil suitable for a LSD, which most quality Gear oils are anyway. The centre diff is also a viscous coupling, which uses the same oil as the gearbox/front diff, and obviously there are no requirements for s special oil for this.

The rear diff. uses a viscous L.S. so does not require a L.S. specific GL5. I have used a full synthetic GL5 in the g'box with poor results - the synchro. became easily beaten during changes at high(ish) revs (especially 4th to 5th) I now use Castrol Syntrax which cured the problem - Highly recommended.

For rear dif. use only 75W/140 GL-5 or Motul 90PA oils. I had troubles with Motul Gear300 in rear. Cas was like no LSD. After chaging to 90PA is all Ok now.
