If i Buy a simple router with 4 port hub to use on my cable modem. Can i run an ftp site from one of the PC's connected to it?
Or would this be impossible as all four would have the same ip?

Most routers designed for home networks will allow incoming services.
You normally configure which internal IP address you want each service (e.g. ftp / http /smtp etc) forwarded on to.
Think carefully about how you secure your ftp server if you're going to open it to the Internet on a permanent basis.

Hello
As above you just have to look at how to configure the router and there is normally a place where you specify "port forwarding".
If you are going to set up an FTP server, I would suggest using a port other than 21 as a (very limited) form of initial protection.

195.153.10.1:80 for web site
195.153.10.1:21 for ftp
etc....

Would you not set one PC up as a firewall and then use the other PC's behind this anyway. If this is the case you can assign any IP address behind the firewall, as FTP connections will come into the firewall and be re-directed from there.

FB - That's how I have it at the moment (kind of), but it's not really practical to have a PC on all the time to let the other's access the internet.
I'd prefer the router set up, as I feel it will be more secure

Go router
That's what I have (courtesy of Deano ) & it means that the router can be setup nice & tight to start with & then run something like ZoneAlarm on each PC to add a bit more protection. Behind the main (broadcast) IP address, I'm running a separate subnet with a private IP range, so it is pretty secure. It's also simple to use & does what it says on the box

Becareful when you run a server of your cable modem.
I'm with NTL and in the T&C it says I cannot run servers NTL do check every now and then looking at certain ports.
If you are in the same position as me, then the best bet would be to put your server on a different port.

I know NTL are fussy about running servers, but Blueyonder told me I was fine , as long as I had no more than 10 connections at a time.
It's only really for personal file transfer.. I'm not hosting a WAREZ site

You've got a firewall in front of the LAN. You dont really need zone alarm - its not adding anything. The Firewall only lets valid return packets in - just as zonealarm would. If your worried about a server being comprimised through one of the opn ports, zonealarm isnt really going to help either. You'd have to move to a Green/Red/DMZ setup.
Does zonealarm provide activex/jave type protection or is that part of your anti-virus ? - 'cos that is useful
Unless of course you're worried about internal attacks (has the wife been reading up on hacking )
I mean, you might get someone to help let new things in/out only to discover that zone-alarm is getting in the way aswell

Just thought of something...
Avi - if you're with blueyonder you'll be getting IP's dynamically? Wont that be a bit of a pain in the ****? If it's static how did you manage that 'cause I asked my blueyonder install blokie and he grunted "not yet, later in the year!"

My IP hasn't changed since I had it installed, but if it does, there are services available that monitor your IP and then point a domain name to it for FREE.
When my PC connects up, it would connect to a site and update it's current ip.
when i connect to ftp://aviz.dns2go.com, this points to my PC.
I had this set up, but after realising my IP never changed, i turned it off
try http://www.dns2go.com
