64-bit XP Pro
#1
Just got my copy of XP-Pro (thanks Scan for sending 2 copies )
I'm so bored at work that I'm actually reading the readme prior to installing at home tonight.
It says there's a 64-bit only version which won't run DOS or 16-bit windows apps. I didn't know it existed.
My question is - has anyone installed this version, and have you had any hassle with compatability?
My only mission critical software is IE, Photoshop and Age of Empires II all 32-bit stuff.
I presume its also a lot quicker as it can access the 64-bit Pentium registers.
Thoughts?

I think you need specific 64-bit hardward (Itanium and all that crap) don't you?
It'd be a 64-bit binary too, which won't be the same as 'normal' XP. It's not just something you can switch on/off - it's a whole different install....

I don't think you can get hold of it yet though.
If you go to http://msdn.microsoft.com and search for 'Itanium', you'll find stacks of pages and can read all about it.

Not wishing to brag, but I've got it running on one of my systems ...
(An Itanium obviously)
Doesn't seem to be particularly fast from a user perspective
(first generation Itanium system?)
but would be faster if doing heavyweigh 64-bit crunching etc
Runs 32-bit apps fine
Doesn't run 16-bit apps
It was apparently released at the same time as the 32-bit XP (Oct 2001) for pwer users on 64-bit platforms
Will come more into it own with 64-bit .Net Server later in the year (or whenever it releases)
