Default PayPal Scam? just received an email from them.

Just got an email from "PAYPAL" saying they spotted a transaction of £99.99 and if i didn't make it i should click on the link to cancel it and get a refund.

I didn't buy anything at £99.99 but rather than click the link i went directly to my PayPal account and there is no sign of this £99.99 purchase , just a recent purchase of £3.50 for something i bought off Ebay which is correct.

Is this just an Email scam ? Is there any way of telling in the future that its not actually Paypal even though it says it in the email heading ?

here is the details - (Including the link , i didnt click it , is it ok to put on here?

PayPal is constantly working to ensure security by regularly screening the accounts in our system.
You made a payment to EPSON UK from your PayPal account.

Review the transaction informations below:

Date: 26 August 2013
Transaction ID: PP**********
Amount: £99.99 gbp
Product: Epson Perfection V370 Photo

If you have not authorized this charge, log in as soon as possible and cancel the payment.

https://www.paypal.co.uk

You will get a full refund after your payment will be cancelled.
If you made this payment and you will like to be approved just ignore this email.
PayPal is required by law to comply with European Union Anti-Money Laundering regulations
by collecting information from customers, when we have any suspicion about an fraudulent payment.
These steps need to be completed within 1 day to comply with this regulation.

yeah mate its sneaky . Just logged directly into account and it looks fine. Went to security pages and it says -

You’ll know that an email is not from PayPal when:
The email uses a generic greeting like ‘Dear user’ or ‘Hello, PayPal member.’ We'll always address you by your first and last name or the business name on your PayPal account.
The email requests financial and other personal information. A real email from us will never ask for your bank account number, debit or credit card number etc. Also we'll never ask for your full name, your account password, or the answers to your PayPal security questions in an email.
The email asks you to provide the tracking number of a dispatched item, before you've received the payment into your PayPal account
The email includes a software update to install on your computer.
Here are some security tips to help you stay protected online:
Even if a URL contains the word 'PayPal', it may not be a PayPal webpage.
When using PayPal, always ensure that the URL address listed at the top of the browser displays as https://www.paypal.com. The 's' in ‘https’ means the website is secure.
Look for the 'lock' symbol that appears in the address bar. This symbol indicates that the site you are visiting is secure.

Paypal will always refer to you by name. If your name does not appear on the correspondence, delete it.

just wondering about the link they have , although it looks right , do they embed something in it to take you to a fake Paypal or something ?

also , the email is only on my laptop inbox , it never came through to my mobile . Antivirus on my phone block it maybe ?

Put your mouse pointer over the link and see in the status bar at the bottom or the popup tip what the actual site is that the link goes to.

Almost certainly a scam though.

Also look for spelling and poor grammar, the thing in that
message that jumped out at me was the following...

"Review the transaction informations below"

The 's' on the end of the word information is a classic
error often made by the Nigerian scammers.

I had one the other day saying "you have sent a payment of £44 to Skype" in the style of a normal paypal page!!

At the bottom of the page it said
"if you didn't authorise the payment click the link below"

It looked very convincing, however I am wise to this and just deleted it!!

I can see why so many people get caught out though!!
